“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 17
Rebecca thought she was going to go crazy before it was time to go find Brian. When it was close enough to time, she put her hair up, slipped on some sandals then left. She decided to calm down and just enjoy her walk to the beach. It took a little over twenty minutes until she finally saw him sitting out on the rocks facing the ocean. He was wearing khaki pants and a blue oxford shirt that was unbuttoned over a white t-shirt. ‘God bless those rocks,’ she thought to herself and it made her laugh. ‘What the hell was that? You’re losing it Bec.’ She climbed up and walked out to him. “Hey you,” she said.
He turned and stood up. “Hey,” he said reaching out to her. She took his hand and they stood together.
“What are we doing here?”
“Impatient are we?”
“You’ve had me waiting and wondering for over two hours! You know that drives me crazy.”
“Yes, that’s why I did it.”
“Gee you’re so sweet.”
“I know. Let’s just enjoy this for a little while.” Standing behind her, he put his arms around her waist and rested his chin on her shoulder. The ocean was calm and there was a refreshing breeze. When the wind blew he could smell the scent of her shampoo. Strawberries… she always smelt like strawberries or peaches. Brian thought it was weird that a smell could make someone happy, but her sweet scent could always bring a smile to his face. “This is where we met,” he said before he even realized he was speaking.
“Yeah… actually we met right over there,” she said pointing to the beach beside the rocks. “If you want to get specific.”
“Alright smart ass, I wasn’t trying to be specific.”
“Hehe, sorry. You still haven’t said why we’re here.”
He turned her around to face him and he smiled. “You really don’t want to wait anymore do you?”
“No, please kill the suspense before I kill you.”
“Ok, ok. I’m not going to stand here and give you some big speech, even though I could. I’m just going to come right out and say it…”
“Brian, you’re shaking.”
“I know… it’s just that… this is getting harder to do than I thought it was gonna be. Bec, I love you and I always will. When I thought I was going to lose you, I felt like part of me was dying, and I’ve never felt like this before. That’s how I know that this is right. I want to spend the rest of my life with you… and only you.” With shaking hands Brian pulled a small black velvet box out of his pocket. He opened up revealing a small pale gold ring with a 7-step diamond center. Inside an inscription: ‘Always and Forever’ “Will you marry me?”
Rebecca’s hand instantly went up and covered her mouth as she gasped. This was the last thing she would have ever expected him to do, and she was in shock. She just stood there and looked from him to the ring, and tears started to swell up in her eyes. She started to slowly nod her head and she whispered, “Yes”.
“You will?”
She was still nodding. “Yes… yes I will marry you.”
He smiled and slid the ring onto her finger. He pulled her into a hug and kissed her sweetly. There they stood, for the longest time staring out at the ocean that brought them together. No words needed to be spoken... there were no words to say in a moment like that, what they felt in their hearts said it all. Everything was perfect and how it should be, and neither Brian nor Rebecca could have asked for anything more.
