“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 15
Slowly for three days, Rebecca sat and waited until she was able to go home. When that day came, Brian entered her room. His face was down, and he didn't seem happy to be having his girlfriend come home. Rebecca looked at him, "Bri? Smile."
He looked up at her with sad eyes, "Hey babe. Ready?"
"Not until you smile."
Brian quickly put on a fake smile and grabbed her bag, "Ready now?"
"Oh come on... that was pathetic. I bet you're just mad because you won't be able to give me any more sponge baths."
Brian plopped the bag back on her bed and wrapped his arms around her waist. He tried harder to make a more believable smile, but stopped. "I'm sorry. I just can't smile right now. Too much stuff is on my mind." He leaned in and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. He grabbed her hand and her bag and started for the door. They walked down to his car in silence. Brian unlocked Rebecca's door and let her in.
He walked around to his side and got in. Without saying a word, he started his car and pulled out of the parking lot. Rebecca looked at him, "Tell me what's on your mind."
"Nothing."
"It's something."
"Just air. Nothing important."
"Damnit Brian, you're starting to piss me off. I don't want to go home now." Rebecca folder her arms and looked out her window.
"What now? I'm happy that you're coming home, but I don't feel like jumping up and down. If you must know I just got into another fight with Kevin."
"Oh man, what did Kevin do now?" She returned her gaze to Brian.
"Nothing."
"If you answer me with 'nothing' one more time, I'm going to bitch slap you in the head with my cast!"
"Fine! Kevin just pissed me off. He said my dog is ugly." Brian's eyes started to frown as he stared at the road.
Rebecca shot Brian a weird look, "You're this upset because Kevin called your dog ugly??"
"Yes." Brian sniffed, "I love the dog."
"I know you do but... ok Brian. Whatever." Rebecca returned to looking out the window. She knew that wasn't the real reason why he was mad.
For the rest of the ride home, they sat in silence. Almost an hour later, Brian pulled into his driveway. He stepped out the car and grabbed Rebecca's bag. Rebecca helped herself out of the car and followed behind him up to the front door. Brian unlocked the door and the two of them went inside. As soon as he turned on the lights they were greeted by a loud “WELCOME HOME!” that was shouted by Nick, Hannah, AJ, Lauren, Kevin, and Howie. As a reflex Rebecca put on hand over her heart and the other over her mouth.
“You guys… you didn’t have to do this,” she said.
“We wanted to! We are all glad that you’re home and that we don’t have to go to that hospital anymore!” Hannah said hugging Rebecca and everyone else did the same.
“I wasn’t really mad… it was the only way I could keep the secret. But Kevin did say my dog is ugly!” Brian said putting an arm around her waist.
“No I didn’t, I just said he looks funny,” Kevin said.
“Where’s Gina?” Rebecca asked looking around for her.
“Oh! She was in the…” Before Kevin could finish Gina came running in from the bathroom.
“Damn I missed it! I’ll just do it by myself then… welcome home!” Gina walked up to Rebecca and gave her a hug. "Now, we party!"
They all walked into the kitchen and a big plate of food was spread out on the table. Alongside it was a smaller table full of drinks. Rebecca looked around and smiled, "This is just great guys! Thanks so much!"
"Anything for you," Brian kissed her. AJ interrupted by running up to them and hugging them. He sniffed as he walked away. He walked into Lauren's arms, who was trying to hold back a laugh.
For the rest of the night, soft music played in the background. Everyone sat around and told stories and just had some quiet fun. A few hours later, half the party split up and went home, but Kevin and Gina offered to stay to help clean up. Gina was picking up soda cans in the living room when she noticed Rebecca outside on the patio. She dropped the bag and went to talk to Rebecca.
"Aren't you cold?" Gina stood next to her.
"Not really. I got numb after a few minutes." Rebecca stared out at the grass.
Gina sat down on the pavement, "So what's on your mind?"
"Brian."
"What about the pooper-scooper?" Gina stared at her feet, "Sorry."
"It's okay. I just want to know where we stand. I mean, we had all those fights then the accident happened. And now we're like back to square one at being loving and stuff. You know?" Rebecca chewed on her lower lip.
"Yeah. He does love you. He would never do anything to hurt you. Just... just hang in there." Gina got up and gave Rebecca a hug, "All men from Kentucky suck with women. Trust me, I have the biggest jerk around my finger, but I love him. I swear it's the sex." Becoming serious again, "Give him one more chance. I have a feeling something's going to happen."
Rebecca looked at Gina, "You know something, don't you?"
Playing, "Nnnnoooo. All I know is that..." Gina turned around and saw Kevin getting ready to leave, "…that I'm going home."
"Gina! Tell me!" Rebecca started to walk inside with her.
Gina ignored her and ran up to Kevin. His back was towards her so she jumped for a free piggyback ride. She quickly kissed his neck as they headed for the door. From a distance Gina screamed "Bye Becky!" from the front door.
Brian walked into the living room and saw Rebecca picking up trash. He walked up to her and slipped his arms around her waist. "Come to bed. I'll clean up tomorrow." He kissed her neck.
"Okay." Rebecca started to walk to the room.
Brian came up behind her and picked her up, "No, no. I'll carry my queen to bed."
