Chapter 2

“Abby! Come look at the picture I drew for my mom and dad!”

Abby entered the small room of the enthusiastic eight-year-old girl. She smiled and held up the scribbly drawing of a sunset over the ocean with ‘I love you mommy and daddy’ written in the center.

“That’s beautiful Nikki!”

Abigail Peters worked at a children’s hospital with kids that had cancer. She served as a big sister and friend for the kids, talking to them, playing, or just sitting holding their hand if they were having a bad day. It was a tough job, but she loved being with them and helping in the little ways that she could. The hard part came when they were really sick after a chemo treatment, or if they were just plain sick, and she could only watch helplessly and wish that there was something she could do to take their pain away.

But it was the good days like this that made her job a joy, seeing the smile on Nikki’s face. “You think they’ll like it?” she asked.

“Of course they will. I bet they’ll love it so much that they’ll make a special place in the refrigerator for it.”

The girl’s smile grew bigger. “I’m gonna draw you one now, but you can’t see it ‘til I’m finished so you gotta leave.”

Abby smiled back, “Okay, I’ll be back shortly.” She went down the hall to another room and was about to go in when she was stopped by a nurse asking her to wait. “Everything’s okay, it’s it?”

“Yeah… oh yeah! He’s fine. Sorry about that, but I have something to ask you. Some of the nurses were given tickets to a charity ball, and I can’t go so I was wondering if you wanted my two tickets? It’s for a good cause, all the money goes to children’s hospitals all over the US.”

“I don’t know Deb… A charity ball doesn’t really sound like my thing.”

“Come on Abby. There’s going to be famous people there, actors, actresses, and even musicians. Just think, you’ll get to mingle with the stars.”

“Oh, alright. I’ll go but now I have to find a dress and shoes and ugh! This is just going to suck big time.”

“It will not! And just think of the whole thing as helping the kids. You never know, you might meet some gorgeous, famous guy and he’ll ask you to dance, and you’ll stare into each other’s eyes, and you’ll fall in love…”

“That only happens in fairytales.”

“You could be the living Cinderella, and the famous guy is your prince charming that comes to your rescue.”

Abby sighed. “But I don’t need rescuing from anything.”

Deb sighed too, “Fine, ruin it for me. You could have at least indulged me a little. But I do have a feeling about all of this, and something I said will come true, you just watch.”

Abby laughed a little and shook her head, “Go back to work.”
