"Matters of the Heart"

Chapter 7

Brian was awakened by the sunlight steaming in on his face from the window. Slowly he moved around the bed trying not to wake up Rebecca, rubbing his eyes and made his way to the kitchen. Brian searched around the kitchen for the coffee. When he found it, he got to work on making it.
Rebecca rolled over on the bed feeling for Brian. Her arm continually kept hitting a pillow until it fell off the bed. She then realized that it wasn't Brian. She opened her eyes and looked at her clock sitting next to the bed. 9:28 a.m. Smiling at all the sleep she had caught up on, she got out of bed and walked to the kitchen where she could smell fresh coffee brewing.
"Morning," Rebecca said scratching her head and walking sleepily into the kitchen.
"Hey!" Brian's smiling face greeted her. He walked over and handed her a cup of hot coffee.
"Thanks," she leaned in and stole a kiss from Brian's smiling lips.
"I have an idea," Brian said in-between their kisses. "Come over to my place today."
"For what?" Rebecca looked at him with a faint smile.
"Let's go swimming. Just you..." Brian kisses her cheek, "me..." he kissed her other cheek, "together."
Just when he was about to kiss her lips, Rebecca turned her head and wrapped her arms around his neck, "And all wet."
Brian's face lit up and both of them fell into laughter. After a light breakfast of blueberry muffins, Rebecca changed, grabbed some clean clothes, her swimsuit and stuffed it all into a bag. She ran out to the car where Brian already waited with the roaring engine.
The ride toward Brian's was filled with laughter and fighting over the radio stations which seemed natural to them. Brian parked his car in the driveway and just sat behind the wheel staring at Rebecca. Rebecca felt his eyes on her and turned to him, "What?" she asked.
"Nothing. I'm just in awe of you," he reached down, grabbed her hand and brought it up to his mouth. He kissed the palm of her hand, "So you can always hold all of my kisses whenever you need them." With those words echoing in her head, tears started streaming down her face one by one. Brian reached over and kissed her softly on the cheek, catching one tear between his lips, "I didn't mean to make you cry, I'm sorry."
"No, that was just incredibly sweet."
"I mean it. Every word." Rebecca wiped her tears with the back of her hand and reached into the back seat of his car, grabbing her bag. Brian then remembered what they were going to do, "I'm gonna get you all wet!" Rebecca busted out laughing hitting her head on the dashboard. "Oh my gosh! Are you okay?" Brian reached for her forehead trying not to laugh.
"Yeah I'm fine. I just took what you said in a different manner."
"Really?" Brian raised his eyebrows, "What if I did mean that?"
"What?!?"
"No I was just kidding. It's a joke... ha ha."
Rebecca just smiled and got of the car. Brian happily followed.
Brian unlocked the door where they were greeted by Tyke, his Chihuahua. "Hey man! What's up?" Brian picked up the dog and introduced him to Rebecca. "This is Rebecca. She hot huh?" Brian let Rebecca hold him. When he started to lick her face, Brian pulled him away, "Well too bad, she's mine!" and set him back on the floor. Brian smiled, "You can go change in the bedroom. I can just use Nick's room." The joy in Brian's eyes started to fade.
"No, it's okay. I'll just use the bathroom. You can have the room. Plus your clothes are in there," Rebecca spoke up already heading towards the bathroom.
After changing, Rebecca walked out of the bathroom and made her way towards the pool. She saw Brian standing shirtless next to the pool, trying to get the fallen leaves out of the pool. She studied his body. Every curve of his muscles, every hair on his chest seemed to be strategically placed as if he were a Roman God. When he moved, his body never faltered, it moved like a wild horse running free in an open field. She couldn't move, just stare. Brian walked around the pool. His back was now facing her. She never took her eyes off the movement of the muscles in his back. She thought it was as beautiful as watching the waves of an ocean crash upon rocks. She gathered up enough courage and walked quietly up behind Brian. She slid her hands up and down his back without touching him. When she got to his shoulder blades, her hands made contact. She felt the muscles in his back tighten but it was too late. Rebecca pushed him into the warm water of the pool.
He came to the surface sputtering but smiling. "You have five seconds to get away starting now," he said pulling himself up and out of the water. She tried to run away but she didn't get very far, and Brian grabbed her then threw the both of them into the pool. He came up first and when she came up he pushed her back down and swam away.
"Ok are we even now?" she asked when she came up again.
"I dunno… what you did was pretty uncalled for," he said with a fake pout.
"Aww I'm sorry. You were just so tempting standing there, I couldn't help myself." She swam over to him and he was trying not to smile. "Can you forgive me?"
He didn't say anything until she put her arms around his shoulders. "So you find me tempting and you can't help yourself around me, huh?" he asked breaking into a smile.
"Don't flatter yourself Littrell."
"Hey, you said it not me. Well what if I told you that I find you tempting and that it's hard for me to control myself around you?"
"I'd tell you to take a long cold shower." He gave her a hurt look and pulled away from her. "I was joking again! Don't swim away." He didn't stop and swam to the other side of the pool then climbed out. "Where are you going?" He picked up his drink, took a big gulp of it, and sat it back down. She just watched as he stepped up and stood on the end of the diving board. The entire time they never broke eye contact until he dived into the water. She watched his figure swimming towards her under the water, and before she knew what happened within a matter of seconds she was up in the air then under water. She resurfaced inches away from Brian and he had a huge grin on his face. "I see you're happy now," she said.
"Yes I am," he said putting his arms around her. He leaned in really close and whispered in her ear, "Guess what."
"What?"
"You look good all wet."
"You don't look too bad yourself."
"Guess what else," he whispered again.
"What?"
"I like being all wet with you." He started kissing right below her ear and moved around to her lips. They kissed for a few moments until the ringing of the telephone ruined the moment. "Nooo…" Brian whined. "Stupid phone." He swam to the side and grabbed the phone. "Hello. Oh hey Kev what's up?"
"Hey man! When are you coming over?"
"Coming over? For what?"
"Don't tell me you forgot. You did, didn't you?"
"Uh… no… I just don't remember."
"So you did forget!"
"No, there's a difference between forgetting and not remembering."
"Really? Indulge me."
"Well you see… ok so what did I forget?"
"Well two weeks ago I said that there was a BBQ at my place. You promised you'd come. Now when are you coming?"
"OH that! See I told you I didn't forget. Um… I dunno if I'm coming..." Brian said watching Rebecca swim around the pool.
"What? Man you said that you would! So you're just going to break a promise... I get it now."
"I'm sorry Kev, it's just that I kinda have something else going on."
"What? What is it?"
"Well see Kev, there's this.... Well. I met someone and I want to spend some time with them, you know?"
"So some chick is more important than keeping a promise to your cousin?"
"It's not like that man, you know I'm not like that. And she's not some chick!" Brian said angry that he said that. Rebecca stopped swimming and looked at him. He gave her a signal that everything was ok.
"Man I'm sorry! How about this? Bring her along. I would love to meet her."
"I guess I could do that, but I have to ask her first."
"Then ask."
"Ok I will, hold on a second." Brian put the phone down to talk to Rebecca. "My cousin Kevin is having a BBQ at his house this afternoon, and he wants us to come. He really wants to meet you, so would you like to go? My other friends will probably be there also, and they'd want to meet you too. We don't have to if you don't want."
"I don't know… I guess we can go," she said.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah."
"Ok." Brian picked the phone back up to talk to Kevin. "She said yes."
"That's great! Bring her, your bathing suits and whatever else you wanna bring and come on any time. Later Brian."
"Bye Kevin."
