"Matters of the Heart"

Chapter 14

Brian didn't speak the whole way back to his house. The only sound that came out of him was an occasional sniff. Neither of them knew what to say, but Rebecca wanted to badly just to hear his voice, to know that he was going to be ok. As soon as they got to the house he turned off the engine and ran inside. Rebecca quietly followed trying her hardest not to break down and cry. Nick greeted her as she came through the front door with a puzzled look on his face.
"What's wrong with Brian?" he asked.
She sighed. "He uh… him and Kevin got into a fight… and it's all my fault." She couldn't take it anymore, and the tears fell. "He hasn't said a word to me since… and I don't know what to do…"
Nick put a comforting arm around her shoulders, not really knowing what to do. "It can't be that bad… just give him a chance to cool off. I'm sure everything will be fine. You should go try to talk to him."
"If it doesn't work, will you take me home?" she asked wiping her face.
"Sure."
She went to Brian's room and the door was closed. She knocked and turned the knob but it was locked. She knocked again, "Brian… come on open the door." Nothing. "Please… please don't shut me out." Still nothing. "I'm so sorry Brian… I'm so sorry." She started crying again as she backed away from the door. She waited for a minute to see if he'd open up, but it didn't happen. Nick, who was feeling really bad for the both of them, took her home. He hated seeing people cry, especially when he couldn't do anything to help. He felt even worse about leaving her at her house all alone, and he offered to stay awhile but she said no. He told her to call if she needed anything, and left when she disappeared behind closed doors.
Brian came out of his room when Nick left only to lock himself in the studio at the back of the house, and that was where he remained for the rest of the day and night. He only slept about a total of an hour, if that. Nick came to the door a couple of times begging him to open the door and to not shut him out again, but Brian didn't respond. He couldn't bring himself to speak, no matter how hard he tried the words just wouldn't come out.
Rebecca cried herself to sleep that night afraid that she had just lost the best thing that had ever happened to her, the one thing that had been keeping her alive. The next morning she was awaken by the phone ringing non-stop for the past couple of minutes. Sleepy she answered, "Hello?"
"Hey! It's Nick. Um... did Brian come over last night?"
"No, why?"
"Damnit! He is missing! He was in the studio last night but when I woke up, he was gone! I'm scared, I don't know where he is. I thought the he might have gone over to your place. Do you have any idea where he might have gone?"
"Uh… maybe. I know one place where he could be. I'll get dressed and go look for him."
"Ok, please find him. I've looked everywhere I could think of."
"I'll try Nick."
Rebecca hung up the phone and threw on a pair of shorts and a tank top. She ran a brush through her hair, set the record time for brushing her teeth, and as soon as her shoes were on her feet she ran out the door heading towards the beach.
Her feet wouldn't move fast enough for her and it seemed to take forever to get there. The whole way she prayed that he would be there. Her stomach started cramping on the way, and the closer she got the more it hurt. She stopped to catch her breath when she saw his figure sitting up on the rocks off in the distance. After a few moments she started walking to the rocks. By the time she got to them, she was scared to breathe. As she climbed up about 20 feet behind him, time seemed to stand still. That short distance seemed so far away. She stopped again when she was a little less than ten feet away from him. She just stood there watching him, seeing his shoulders shake, not sure as to what she wanted to say. But she didn't have to speak because Brian spoke first.
"I love you Bec," he said turning around.
"How'd you know I was here?" Rebecca walked towards Brian and took a seat beside him.
"I don't know. I could just feel your presence," Brian looked at Rebecca. His eyes were swollen and red from crying. Pink circles outlined his eyes. "I was thinking about the first time we met. I wish sometimes I could turn just turn back the clock and just live that part over and over. As if time didn't exist."
Rebecca looked out at the ocean coming in and out of the rocks. It was so beautiful and perfect. She thought about when they first met, then their first kiss. "Brian, that..." She stopped and thought about a way to put her thoughts into words. "Every time I'm with you, I always live that part over and over. Just being with you is like heaven."
"If it's heaven then why are there people screwing this up for us?"
"Kevin is..." She didn't want to say anything bad about his cousin.
Brian interrupted, "An asshole that doesn't know what he's talking about?"
Rebecca smiled faintly, "Yeah, you can say that. I was going to say something like Kevin is trying to just look out for you, but that'll work." She looked over at Brian. His soft cheeks were burning from the falling tears. She reached over and wiped them away. Brian grabbed her hand and kissed her open palm.
"I meant what I said."
Tears filled up Rebecca's eyes, "I know. I love you too."
"We'll get past this… right?"
"Yeah, I think we will," she said leaning into him. He rested his head on top of hers and held her hand. They sat like that for a long time in silence, staring at the ocean that brought them together. Out of no where Rebecca jumped. "Oh my God! I forgot all about Nick!"
Brian jumped at her sudden outburst. "What? What about Nick?"
"He called me scared to death because you were missing. We have to go let him know that you're alright." She pulled him up by his hand and pulled him along behind her and he started laughing.
"Ok, I guess we're going home now."
