"Matters of the Heart"

Chapter 11
Brian woke up the next morning and the first thing he did was pick up the phone. He didn't even bother to look at the time. After three rings a sleepy sounding Rebecca picked up.
"Hello," she said.
"Morning baby."
"Good morning. Thanks for waking me up by the way."
"Hey it was my pleasure."
"You seem happy. I take it everything went well with Nick?"
"Yeah, everything was great."
"I'm happy for you."
"I miss you."
"I miss you too. Oh I wanted to ask you something. Will you go somewhere with me today? There are a couple of people that I want you to meet."
"No problem. Who is it?"
"I can't tell you that."
"Um, ok. When do you want to go?"
"Whenever you feel like it."
"Well, what do you say about grabbing some breakfast then going to where ever you're taking me?"
"Sounds good to me."
"Ok. I'll pick you up in about forty-five minutes."
Rebecca hung up the phone and lied in bed staring at the wall. She lazily got up and jumped into the shower. She wasn't in any hurry, just took her time and thought about Brian. When she decided that she was clean, she got out and dried herself. She wrapped the towel around her body and walked out to the kitchen to make some coffee. After it got started, she headed back to her room to get dressed and glancing at the clock that hung on the wall. She had 15 minutes. With 15 minutes left, she put on some shorts and a light blue shirt. 10 minutes. She thought that she could get in a little 2-minute nap and lied back down on the bed. Rebecca was startled awake by a continuos knocking at her door. Her head started pounding and she ignored the knocking and put a pillow over her head. She started to drift back to sleep when she remembered Brian was coming over. She jumped out of bed and ran to the front door, hitting her foot on the door. The pain rushed through her body.
"Son of a bitch!!" she cursed. She opened the door and saw Brian walking back towards his car. "Brian!"
Brian turned around, "There you are! Where were you?"
"Oh, I fell asleep," Rebecca watched him walk back to her. "Want some coffee before we leave? I just made some."
"Sure, but I was thinking that we could stop by at McDonald's and grab some breakfast."
"Yeah, that sounds great." She shut the door behind him and walked towards the kitchen with a limp.
"Why are you limping?"
"I just knocked the shit out of my foot running to answer the door."
"Aww my poor baby. Here I'll kiss it and make it better."
"You're gonna kiss my foot?"
"Well no… but I'll do this," he said then pulled her into a nice long kiss. "Feel better?" he asked when they broke away.
"Yeah, much better."
"Just to make sure you're okay," Brian leaned in and stole a kiss from Rebecca's sweet lips.
"You know, come to think of it... I'm not ok... it hurts really, really bad."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah."
"Fine then," Brian picks up Rebecca and carries her into the kitchen. Setting her back onto a chair he kisses her again. "Better?"
"Uh not quite yet..."
"Bec... fine then, one more kiss and that's it. Or else we might have to do something else to make you feel a whole lot better." Brian shot Rebecca a teasing smile, "If you know what I mean." He kissed her again for the forth time.
"I'm still in a lot of pain. Make it go away Brian, make it all go away." Brian gave her a look and laughed as he walked to the cupboard and got out two cups. He poured some coffee and sat them on the table. "Well you just suck," she said sipping her coffee.
Brian sat leaned on the counter across from Rebecca and watched her in silence as she sipped her coffee. Rebecca looked up and saw Brian's blue eyes looking back into hers. They stared at each other until Brian's coffee cup slipped from his hand, smashing onto the floor. Burning coffee splattered onto the floor and on his legs.
"Oh! I'm so sorry!" Brian said apologizing for his mess.
Rebecca ran to this sink and started to wipe the coffee off of Brian's pants. She looked up and Brian stood there looking down at her, blushing. "Sorry," she said.
"It's ok… I'll clean up the glass."
"I'll go get the mop."
After cleaning up the mess they were hungry and decided to go ahead and leave. Before they went to get food they went back to Brian's house so he could change into a clean pair of shorts. They ate a quiet breakfast in a back corner booth at McDonalds. Brian kept his head low hoping that he wouldn't get recognized. He didn't feel like dealing with fans… not at that moment. He didn't mind signing autographs on the street or something like that, but it just bugged him when he was eating. Plus he didn't want them bothering Rebecca either. There was no way of knowing what they would say. He could tell that a few people recognized him by the time that they left, but luckily no one said anything to him.
Back in the car, Rebecca gave Brian directions to their destination. He was curious about where they were going because she became so quiet, but he knew there was no point in asking. She just stared out the window and didn't speak until she had to tell him when to turn or to keep going straight. Brian, almost scared to speak, patiently drove to their destination. He recognized the streets around him and the way Rebecca was telling him to go. They were heading to a cemetery. He had an idea as to why they were going there, but he still didn't say anything. He parked the car and she took his hand leading the way. They didn't walk long before she stopped and knelt down, not letting go of his hand.
"These are my parents," she said barely above a whisper. "I think they would have loved you… I wish you could have met in person…" She started to get choked up and Brian knelt down closely behind her and put both of his hands on her shoulders.
"I would have liked that." They sat in silence for a few moments. Brian wanted to say something but he couldn't think of the right words, and suddenly it came to him and he started to quietly sing so that only the two of them could hear.
"Life goes on as it never ends
Eyes of stone observe the trends
They never say forever gaze
Guilty roads to an endless love
There's no control
Are you with me now
Your every wish will be done
They tell me…
Show me the meaning of being lonely
Is this the feeling I need to walk with
Tell me why I can't be there where you are
There's something missing in my heart…”
Tears rolled down Rebecca's face from the moment Brian started to sing. The combination of the words and the sound of his voice were just perfect together. She couldn't help but cry. "That was beautiful Brian," she said with a sniff. He leaned around, wiped her tears away with his thumbs, and kissed her on the cheek. "Could you give me a second alone then we can leave?"
"Yeah sure," he said standing up.
"Don't go too far."
"I won't."
She watched him walk away with his hands in his pockets to a nearby tree, where he leaned against the trunk and waited. She watched him for a moment before turning back to face the granite headstones. She traced the outlines of their names, feeling the cool stone beneath her finger-tips as more tears slid from her eyes. "Hey mom, hey dad," she whispered. "I miss you guys so much… but I'm hanging in there. I brought someone special here to meet you. It wasn't a normal meeting, but that's ok. His name is Brian, but for some reason I think you already know that… I know you wouldn't want me to be sad… you guys always hated seeing me sad and you always did everything you could to make me happy. I don't think I thanked you two enough for that. But I thank you from bringing Brian to me when I needed someone the most…" she stopped for a minute until she could find the words to speak again. "I-I think I'm gonna make… I think we both will. Well he's waiting for me so I guess I should go… I love you." She kissed her fingers and touched each of their names. She stood up, wiped her eyes, and looked over at Brian. He was still leaning against the tree with his head tilted up and his eyes closed. She whispered thank you again, walked over to him and he opened his eyes.
"You ok?" he asked pulling her in for a hug.
"Yeah, I'm ok. Let's get out of here."
