"Matters of the Heart"

Chapter 10

The drive home seemed to take forever. Brian was thinking about Rebecca and Nick the whole time. He was nervous about what was going to happen when he got home. When he got out of his car he took a deep breath then went inside. He found Nick sitting in the kitchen eating a big bowl of ice cream. He looked up when Brian sat his keys on the counter.
"Hey. I hope you don't mind, but I got hungry."
"It's ok."
"So what do you want to talk about?"
"I don't even know where to start."
"The beginning is always a good place." Brian sat down and stared at his hands. He didn't know what to say. He couldn't think of a beginning to start at. Nick got up, rinsed out his bowl, and put it in the dishwasher. He sat back down, and looked at Brian. "So Brian… what's going on?"
"There's a lot going on, but first I think I should start out by saying that I'm sorry about everything. I didn't want to shut you or anyone else out... it just happened."
"I'm starting to understand and I do forgive you, but I need to know what is going on in your head. Like why have you been so distant from almost everyone?"
"Would you believe me when I say that I really had no idea what was happening to me? Because I didn't. The only thing I knew was that I wasn't happy for some unknown reason, and I didn't know how to deal with it."
"Then why didn't you just come and talk to me? You know I'm always here for you, man."
"I know that, but at the time I didn't feel like talking to anyone. I felt so bad about everything that I just... I wouldn't have known what to say to you Nick..."
"I understand, I think. You're not... depressed I guess is the word, anymore are you?"
"Well, not really I mean I have my moments, but when I met Rebecca everything just... she helped a lot, and you probably don't want to hear about her."
"Well not really but she does mean something to you. And I'm trying to like her, I did say sorry."
"She does mean a lot to me… a lot."
"Are you in love with her?"
"Yes, I am actually."
"Seriously? Are you sure you're not just in it for... well you know?"
"Nick! You know I'm not like that!"
"I know but I did you see you in bed with her that one day."
"That... that just happened, and how do I explain that?"
"Please don't explain it. I'm sure that A.J. or Gina would like to hear about that but not me. If you do actually love her, then I'm happy for you."
"Thank you, that means a lot to me."
"Yeah. So are we okay now?"
"Well do you say we're ok?"
"I think so. Can I get a hug now?" They both stood up and embraced in a brotherly hug. "Hey are you tired?" Nick asked when they pulled away.
"No not really."
"Neither am I. Wanna go shoot some hoops?"
"Sure, let's go."
