The Visit
Part Two
Kim is nervous and her hands are starting to sweat; I want to tell them my secret but what if they laugh at me or think I am trying to be in their club? She runs her hands through her hair and tries to smile. It doesn’t matter the truth is best she keeps saying to herself. Kim, Haley and Mandy are finally shopping together on the day before Kim is leaving. She and Mandy have called a truce and Haley is thrilled they can finally bond in a way she appreciates.
After eating breakfast at Karen’s and spending way too much time trying to find the perfect parking spot, courtesy of Mandy. Kim takes a deep breath.
“I have to tell you something,” she says looking from one to the other.
“Should we sit?” Haley asks.
Kim nods and bites her lips as they settle onto a bench.
“I have a baby, actually a two year old daughter named Maree,” she says taking out a picture from her wallet.
“What a beautiful child?” Mandy says adding, “Does Lucas know?”
“No, Lucas does not know.”
“Oh, she is beautiful,” Haley gushes, smiling at Kim.
Kim explains how she was ashamed to tell them after she made such a big deal with everyone about being a virgin. Maree’s Caucasian father didn’t stick around to see her born and has not contacted Kim since they were together. She did file for child support and he pays sporadically through his earnings. Kim thinks he must be working for a relative to keep from having his wages garnished. Haley berates her for ever hiding her beautiful daughter from anyone.
“You don’t want her to have a complex,” Mandy says in her best mother voice.
“Babies are wonderful gifts,” Haley adds putting her arms around Kim’s shoulders.
“Be proud of you daughter,” Mandy adds with a smile.
“I know she is a sweet angel, Amber reminds me of her; I wish she had a father like Lucas,” Kim says blinking her eyes to keep the tears from falling.
Kim refuses to cry in the mall and they all decide that time for a series shopping spree is overdue.
While Mandy and Kim are trying on clothes; Haley sneaks off to a baby store to get Maree a gift. She and Mandy planned it the first moment they had away from Kim to surprise her. They really want to all get along despite the strange circumstances. Lucas calls on the cell while Mandy is dressing to find out if she and the ladies want to meet him and Nathan later for dinner or for drinks afterward. Karen and Andy are keeping the kids overnight. When they are all leaving the store they decide a late dinner would be best so that Kim can get some rest before getting on the plane the next day.
Kim loves the gift and does end up crying in the mall as they engage in a group hug.
“Thank you for being so nice Mandy, Hales and I have keep in touch over the years but she didn’t even know I was writing Lucas until this week.”
Mandy just smiles as her ill feeling surface all over again. Why does she have to keep saying things that irritate me? Haley can tell when Mandy shuts down her emotions.
“Now let’s get us some fun stuff, I see that Naughty Nightie store up ahead,” Haley says grinning and grabbing them both by the arms and leading them in that direction.
Kim stops to look at the bras while Haley drags Mandy to the back to see the loungewear.
“Take a deep breath,” she commands her friend.
“Just let what she says slide off your back she will be gone tomorrow, okay?”
“I am trying Hales,” Mandy says taking a deep breath.
Haley tells her that Kim is trying at times but she really has a good heart. Mandy rolls her eyes and does not comment, ,i>I will tell her about the way things were at our home when Kim is gone.
At dinner that night Haley pulls Lucas aside to tell him about Kim’s baby; he is surprised and shocked that Kim never told him about her child. Haley gets him to promise her he will not mention it to Kim; if she does tell him herself then he has to pretend not to know. He begrudgingly agrees.
Luckily for Lucas Kim’s conscience is bothering her so she tells him everything after dinner. She says she was depressed after not having dated for quite a while, then she met a man that seemed to be very much like him but after she slept with him he lost interest in her and stopped returning her calls.
“I was stupid Lucas,” she says taking a seat on the bench outside in front of the restaurant.
They had decided it was best to take the conversation outside after the meal while the others were having dessert.
“I really thought I loved him and it seems he just wanted to prove he could take my virginity; It was just a game to him,” she says with tears running down her cheeks. Lucas puts his arms around her and holds as she cries. I sure hope Mandy doesn’t come outside anytime soon.
“I’m not blaming this on you,” she insists.
“I know,” he says.
“I mean I am over you romantically but I was a little jealous of what you seem to have with Mandy, you know?” she adds running her fingers down his face.
This is not good.
“Some things take time, Kim, you shouldn’t try to rush love, I’m sorry that you lost your most precious gift, but you did gain another wonderful gift,” he says.
Adding, “May I see the picture?”
“She is a beauty,” he says handing her the picture.
Lucas and Kim go back inside and everyone is laughing and talking; they seem to not have noticed they were gone. But I know Mandy was missing me.
Lucas kisses Mandy on the cheek as he sits down beside her and smiles; she turns and kisses him on the lips and grins.
The man in the corner looks at the group over his menu and Mandy notices but tries to keep her eyes averted. After a few moments she excuses herself to go to the ladies room; instead she goes outside after making sure no one is watching. On the opposite side of the building she meets Tristan, the man from inside. He is tall with dark hair and blue eyes that sparkle, at least to Mandy. She is drawn to his lips but she has to control herself.
I hate him, I hate him.
“Why are you here?”
“I told you I wouldn’t say anything; leave me alone," she says
“I haven’t seen you in weeks, I’m sorry I couldn’t wait,” he says.
Mandy sighs, “ I can’t do this you have to leave,” she says as she heads back inside.
Thankfully he leaves and she is free concentrate on what Lucas is saying to her. I can’t do this, I love Lucas; how did I ever end up in this position?
