The Engagement
Part Two
Lucas and Mandy are busy building a life together after her move; so they work crazy hours trying to save money and rarely see each other some days. Once or twice a week they engage in activities with their friends. Keith believes that giving Lucas at least an early day or two during the week is doing him a favor. Their fun outings usually include coed volleyball at the community center with their friends and Lucas, Nathan, Jake and others played basketball when possible to help de-stress.
Lucas and Mandy both meet up in the parking lot of their townhouse this particular day; usually they change at work and meet up at the community center on volleyball night.
“You okay,” he says when he sees the frown on her face.
“Two babies came in burned over ninety percent of their little bodies; we couldn’t save them,” she says before breaking down in his arms.
“I’m sorry,” is all he can say as he holds her.
“It’s just the way it is, but it’s hard to get used to,” she says after a few minutes as she wipes her eyes as they walk in the building together.
They have gotten a little distracted from dressing when there is a knock on the door. Lucas puts on his robe to go answer it.
“Hey Bro, you two going tonight, I didn’t expect to see your cars here,” Nathan says looking knowingly at Lucas’ state of undress.
“Yes, we’re dressing, are you going?”
“I’m going home to check on Haley she didn’t answer her cell,” Nathan says turning to leave.
“See you soon,” Lucas adds shutting the door.
When they arrive at the Bayside Community Center they see Peyton and Jake warming up with the others so they take off their sweats and join them. Before they are done choosing teams for the night Brooke comes in wearing shorts that seem a bit short for playing ball.
“Hey,” she says to the group in general.
Peyton adds her to her team so they can get started. With the exception of Brooke and Peyton the others are all on different teams tonight. There are two nets set up and Peyton’s team is playing Lucas’ while Mandy’s team is playing against Jake’s.
The first round; Lucas and Mandy’s team both win so they play one another with Mandy’s team winning by a large margin Lucas laughingly insists Mandy distracted him. Jake’s team creams Peyton team so they play Mandy’s team in the next game. At the end of the night Mandy’s team has won all their games making them the champs for the night. Lucas laughs as he grabs her in a bear hug and starts tickling her.
As they get dressed to leave Lucas and Mandy are again distracted and kissing when Peyton, Brooke and Jake come over to ask them where they are going to eat.
For the first time Brooke sees the ring everyone is talking about.
“Oh my goodness,” she sees getting their attention.
Mandy and Lucas stop kissing and come to join the others.
“What’s up,” Lucas says.
“Nothing, Brooke is just now seeing Mandy’s ring; where are we going to eat?” Peyton says to keep things moving along.
“I’m starving,” Jake says putting Peyton’s hand it on his growling stomach.
“Why didn’t Nathan and Haley show up,” Peyton ask Lucas.
Lucas tells her about Nathan stopping by earlier but that he thought they were coming.
“Does Dairy Queen sound good to everyone,” Lucas says looking at Mandy.
“I’m in,” she says agreeing with everyone’s nods despite their strict all natural food rule.
Mandy calls Nathan and Haley on the way to the restaurant and finds out Hales is under the weather.
Nathan insists he left everyone messages.
At the restaurant they eat and talk with Brooke who seemingly is still in shock, that ring should be on my finger.
“So you two you haven’t told us how the engagement happened,” Peyton says when everyone is done eating.
Lucas explains how after he finally picked up the rings at the jewelers he carried them around for almost two weeks just waiting for the right moment. He wanted her to be completely surprised.
“I really didn’t expect another ring since he asked me to marry him when he gave me the promise ring,” Mandy says smiling at him and interrupting.
He continues after kissing her upturned lips. His opportunity came when she called to tell him she was going to be later than usual. He prepared dinner, which wasn’t that unusual, so it was ready for her when she arrived home. However, she was so tired when she came in he was afraid she would take her shower and go to sleep without eating. It took him a bit of effort to get her to eat the meal and to accept his explanation that he had a special dessert for her. When he left the dining area to get the ring instead of dessert he was nervous but that went a way when he got on bended knee to officially ask her to be his wife. She was stunned.
“I was in shock all my tiredness went away,” Mandy smiles interrupting again.
But the rest is history since she accepted. She puts her arms around him to kiss him again and after a few minutes Peyton suggests they take the party home as Jake smiles at them and Brooke fumes.
“That ring is what I would have chosen; is it white gold?” Brooks asks.
“It’s platinum and its actually the wedding ring I will give her the band at the wedding; so there is no mistake I love Mandy the way I haven’t loved anyone else,” Lucas says getting up to help her with her jacket as they prepare to leave.
“Looks like we have something else in common, Brooke, I love the ring too” Mandy says as they leave with a wave.
Peyton grins as the all get ready to go home.
“Brooke let it go; Lucas is with Mandy now I hate seeing you this way.”
“She’s right,” Jake says.
Brooke denies having a problem with them their relationship.
Brooke’s way of getting through stressful times fluctuate between having sex and creating new designs for her clothing line. Recently, she has acquired a new admirer named Ray that she sees when she wants to be with someone. Ray is an older man,25, she met at a coffee shop outside of town. She would never let any of her other friends know she is seeing a “black man” or that she enjoys spending time with him even when they don’t sleep together. Though she doubts she will ever be totally over Lucas.
