Before Mandy there was Kim.
New Rules
Lucas is early for government class hoping to get a bit of sleep before class. Unfortunately, he isn’t the only early bird. Once he is standing at the door he sees a beautiful girl, who appears to be mixed race, sitting in the back of the room, which he does not recognize. She is reading a book and he taps on the desk next to her get her attention.
“Hello.”
“Hi,” is her friendly reply.
He reaches out his hand.
“I’m Lucas.”
“Great, I’m Kim.
“Are you new here?”
“Yes and no, not new to Tree Hill but new to public school, I was in the Christian Academy for the last six years.”
“Well, welcome.”
Lucas takes a seat and puts his head down on the desk. What seems like only seconds passes and he feels someone shaking him its Kim and the whole class is staring at him.
“Wake up sleeping beauty,” the teacher says.
Everyone laughs as the class begins.
“Thanks,” he whispers to Kim.
She smiles and her perfect teeth catch Lucas off guard.
After class Kim and Lucas agree to meet in the library so he can show her around.
After showing her everything there is to know and telling her all the rules.
“TMI,” she says laughing.
“What?”
“Too much information,” she says laughing.
“Okay let’s take a break,” he says laughing too.
At that moment Lucas sees Brooke and Peyton walking toward them.
“Hey,” he says.
“What’s up Lucas,” Peyton says.
“Showing Kim around, have you meet?”
“Hey Kim you look familiar,” says Brooke.
“Yea, I meet you two during cheerleader competitions a couple years ago.”
“I told you I had seen her before,” Brooke says to Peyton.
They all stand awkwardly for a few minutes then Peyton and Brooke leave.
“See you two later,” Peyton says as they walk away.
They are sitting outside exchanging phone numbers after Lucas has asked Kim out on a date when Nathan shows up.
“Hey Kim, I thought that was you.”
“Hey you,” she says getting up to give Nathan a hug.
Lucas just shakes his head and smiles.
“Hey bro, do you know all the pretty girls?”
“Oh I know Kim from the basketball games, she was a cheerleader.”
Lucas laughs.
“I heard.”
On their date that Saturday night they attend a movie and then go to a late dinner. Lucas and Kim then stop by Karen’s café to talk and have a dessert before he takes her home. They are laughing and talking when Karen brings their orders to the table.
“I’m sorry Mom I would have come to get that.”
“No problem I wanted to meet your friend.”
After the introductions, Karen reminds Lucas the café closes soon, and goes to the back to clean up.
Sitting outside of Kim’s house kissing Lucas doesn’t want to leave her. He reaches to kiss her again and Kim stops him.
“We can go out again,” she smiles.
“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to overwhelm you.”
She runs her fingers down his jawline and smiles.
“Am I your first non-white girl?”
“All this time I didn’t know what I was missing.”
Kim laughs.
“I’m kidding, to me you are a beautiful girl that I hope likes me as much as I am beginning to like you,” he adds.
She moves closer so he can hold her and he kisses her on the head Kim leans in the window as she gets ready to go inside.
“So we can do this again next Friday night, right?” Lucas asks.
“Of course we can, you will call tomorrow too,” she reminds him.
“Talk to you then.”
He waits to make sure she gets in safely, and she waves from the door.
The next day Nathan, Lucas, Tim and the guys are playing basketball when Nathan mentions Kim.
“So how did that work out, bro?”
“It was great,” Lucas laughs.
“Isn’t Kim that black girl,” asked Tim.
Nathan and Lucas both shake their heads and laugh as they keep playing ball and do not reply to Tim. The other guys laugh too.
“What?” Tim asks.
“A beautiful girl is a girl not a color, “Lucas says frustrated with Tim’s ignorance.
“Play ball,” Nathan says.
During school that week, Kim and Lucas are inseparable. By Friday they are walking the hall hand in hand. Peyton and Brooke have become a little distant from Lucas but he is busy with Kim and doesn’t really notice. They decide to go bowling before going to dinner this time. Neither of them bowls very well but they have a great time playing and laughing at themselves. Nathan and Tim show up near the end to play a game with them. Tim’s staring at Kim makes Lucas uncomfortable. Lucas calls him to the side to talk to him about it.
“Why are you staring man,” Lucas says.
“She is pretty, but she is black Luke.”
“Don’t call me Luke, and if you have a problem you can leave,” he says as he walks back over to where Nathan and Kim are standing and talking. When Lucas walks up to them Nathan nods and goes back to where Tim is standing, after a few minutes they leave with a wave from Nathan.
“Tim doesn’t approve, does he?”
“It’s okay, I know how some people can be,” she adds.
Lucas kisses her right there in the bowling alley for all to see. She takes his hand as they walk toward the door. Several people stare at them and Lucas only smiles as they leave.
At the restaurant, Kim explains how she was adopted when she was three years old from an orphanage in Haiti. Her real father was a British officer and her mother was a Haitian. She has been told besides her twin brother Ken, she has three other siblings somewhere.
Her adopted father works for the Defense department and she is unsure how long they will stay in Tree Hill. They have already stayed there longer than in their last home in Michigan. He is a supervisor she explains and he does very secretive work that involves a lot of travel. Lucas explains about his relationship to Nathan and about Dan.
By dessert they were discussing Brooke and Peyton and how they had begun to seem distant from him. Kim laughs at his innocence.
“It seems pretty simple to me.”
“I don’t know if they are both jealous or if one’s jealousy is feeding on the other.”
“That’s ridiculous, I dated Brooke briefly, but Peyton and I have only really been good friends.”
Kim hears something in his voice that she does not like.
“Do you still have feelings other than friendly toward either of them?”
“Oh no my feelings are all for the beauty sitting in front of me.”
Kim smiles but she still has her doubts until after dessert. They take a drive away from their small town further out into the urban areas. It is late but a bit stuffy out so they have the windows down. Lucas is talking about where he grew up in a very small town far away from Tree Hill.
“I really love the open country; the trees the smell of the grass and the lakes.”
After driving a while he stops near a small lake. He backs the seat up a little so he can turn comfortably and look at here.
“I have no doubts about what I feel for you, though I don't like the thought thay you may leave, but that is part of life.”
Kim leans to kiss him, and he eagerly meets her half way. He pulls her close and after a while they stop and stare into each other eyes.
“I don’t believe in pre-marital sex, just so you know” she says kissing him again.
“You sound like my best friend, Haley, I knew there was something about you,” he says smiling.
“She is out of town now, but she should be back soon, I know she will like you.”
She lay her head on his shoulder. For long moments they just sit there listening to the crickets. Then there is a light in the back window; a cop comes to Lucas’ window and asks them to leave because of the town curfew. He also shines the light in Kim’s face and asks if she is a prostitute. Kim rolls her eyes at him.
“No, she is my girlfriend if she will have me," he says looking into her hazel eyes.
She nods and smiles as they back up the car to leave.
They are gone before the cop gets back to his car.
“I’m sorry,” he says.
“It’s not your fault; it’s just life for me.”
On the drive back they make plans for the weekend.
When Haley returns from her trip they get together with her and Nathan for a Friday night out. Haley and Kim really hit it off and Nathan and Lucas just stare at them in awe. Nathan loves the way Haley makes everyone feel important and her and Kim are very much alike.
