After the Wedding Comes Life
Part Two
Lucas is having a hard time sleeping and he decides about one a.m. to call and talk with Mandy who should be on her break. The first time he tries the phone rings and rings with no answer. The second time someone picks up but hangs up right away. He checks his cell to make sure he is calling the right number and verifies that he is. Now he knows something is wrong.
He bundles up Amber and they go to the hospital as he is driving by the door he sees a man leaving and asks him what is wrong.
“Gas leak and all the doors are locked,” the stranger informs him as he returns to his car walking with a limp.
Now he is really worried. He sees Mandy’s car in the parking lot, so he drives around to the back of the building and checks those doors only to find out they are locked. He decides to head to the police station to see if they know what is going on.
The police have no idea what is going on at the hospital. While he and Amber wait for them to check out the gas leak info with the gas company he gets a call.
“Lucas, there are four men with guns do what you can, but no police; I love you,” Mandy says before she hangs up.
“Mandy,” he says too late.
The policeman, Detective Harris, looks at him.
“Was that her?”
Leaving out the I love you; he tells them all what she said,
“So they are hostages,” Sgt. Harris says.
As soon as Mandy hangs up she hides the tiny cell in the paper holder just in case she or someone needs it later; she would hate for them to find it on her. They only let her go to the restroom after they searched her and because she is pregnant. She goes back to the cafeteria where they are holding her and five others; they are a skeleton crew at night though many doctors are on call 24/7. Two of the men are being worked on and one of them is holding guns on those not working. There is another man trying, unsuccessfully to make coffee in the kitchen. Mandy requests permission to make it for him and he is relieved. She is hoping any brownie points she can gain will help them all out of this situation safely.
The police and Lucas are at a stalemate.
“She said no cops,” Lucas insists loudly and Amber begins to cry in his lap.
He picks her up and puts her on his shoulder.
“Please there has to be another way; you know Mandy is pregnant,” he adds with emotion.
“We don’t mean to be callous Lucas but we have to look at what is the best for all concerned.”
“No cops means no cops,” he says leaving in frustration.
He drives around for a while thinking and praying again, something that has become habit since he met Mandy. I guess caring does that to you. He notices Haley and Nathan’s lights are on so he stops there. Hey it’s only two-thirty in the morning.
Nathan doesn’t seem surprised to see him.
“Hey Bro, what’s up?”
“I’m sorry why are you two up so late?”
“Oh Haley just came back from L. A. did you forget?”
Nathan says smiling.
“Oh, I’m sorry I must be interrupting your reunion; I can go,” he say starting to turn and leave.
“No, its fine,” Haley says taking the sleeping baby from him.
“So what are you and Amber doing out this time of morning?” she asks.
Lucas explains about the situation and they are surprised and shocked.
“How did you know, I mean you wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t tried to call,” Haley says with tears in her eyes.
Nathan puts his arms around her.
“I know and I don’t know why all of a sudden I couldn’t sleep tonight and I wanted to speak to her,” he says all choked up.
They all set quietly each thinking their own thoughts.
Mandy is silently praying that the situation will end well; so far there had been no incidents. Two of the men are all stitched up and ready to leave and the last guy is being worked on. She had sewn up the guy who had been interested in coffee earlier and he seemed grateful. The disturbing part of the whole matter is they all seemed like regular guys and she wonders how they ended up this situation. She isn’t staring at anyone in particular but one of the guys thinks she is looking at him and comes over to her.
“What are you looking at?” he asks.
“I’m sorry I really was just looking around not at you.”
His friend convinces him that she is okay and he goes back to sit down Mandy is glad. She decides to just close her eyes and think happy thoughts about her family.
“I’m sorry to be a downer, so how was L. A.?” Lucas says.
“L. A. was productive I got a lot done; I’m sorry about what is going on with Mandy tonight it is so scary and things happen so fast,” she says rambling without thinking.
“She didn’t mean it that way,” Nathan says defending Haley’s thoughtlessness.
“Not a problem I know you both love Mandy.”
Nathan turns on the TV looking for any updates on the hospital situation and is unable to find anything.
“At least the cops have decided to keep it quiet,” Lucas says with a sigh.
After a while Lucas and Amber return home and when Mandy finally arrives there safely Lucas can finally breathe freely. He embraces her as she comes in the door.
“Oh baby, I am so glad you’re here,” he says.
“Me too,” she says holding him close.
She explains how the police were able to get a hold of the janitor at home and they entered the hospital through the back.
“Thanks to you every thing turned out fine,” she adds.
“I don’t why of all nights I decided to call you during your break; I haven’t done that since you first began working there,” he says.
“It was meant to be, obviously,” she says kissing him.
