The Hipster Handbook

The first thing to note about "The Hipster Handbook" is that the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design is included among "Other Colleges Wher Hipsters Can Be Found." It doesn't say why. It's also the only Wisconsin reference in the book. Author Robert Lanham defines a hipster as "One sho possesses tastes, social attitudes and opinions deemed cool by the cool." ("Cool" is so overused that it has a hipster synonym. "deck") "The HIpster walks among the masses in daily life but is not a part of them and shuns or reduces to kitsch anything held dear by the mainstream." Lanham continues. "A hipster ideally possesses nomore than 2% body fat." Lanham spends 176 pages going into more detail about what makes a hipster hip and includes hairstyles for both genders along with profiles of popular hipster stereotypes. This field guide is $9.95 from Anchor Books.-----Reviewed by Kathy Flaniga in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal
