In too many books or movies these days, we get to fully know what's going on. That sort of takes the edge off the terror - what's really horrifying is to have dreadful things going on without knowing why they're happening. This collection of short stories fills that bill, exquisitely. The stories are all based on the canonical horror novels of H.P. Lovecraft, the master of the slimy, tentacled beast from the netherworld. Stories range from high-tech, in which a computer hacker threatens to post a book of spells on the Internet, to the tale of a clairvoyant woman who can't help seeing monsters in any pattern she looks at.
