Fowler does this by way of interspersed chapters flashing back to the late 1970s, with Benni narrating the early years of her too-short marriage to Jack Harper. The technique works. Now happily married to police chief Gabe Ortiz, Benni is looking forward to welcoming a writer, Emma Baldwin, back to town.
