Earlene Fowler's latest Benni Harper "quilt" mystery is out this month. "Sunshine and Shadow" pulls the past into the present, both in terms of background for the crime to be solved and an examination of Benni's first marriage. Fowler does this by way of interspersed chapters flashing back to the late 1970s, with Benni narrating the early years of her too-short marriage to Jack Harper. The technique works. Now happily married to police chief Gabe Ortiz, Benni is looking forward to welcoming a writer, Emma Baldwin, back to town. When one of Gabe's long-ago police buddies shows up in town at the same time, it's starting to look like a San Celina reunion.-----$22.95-----reviewed in the MJS
