Life Sentence

We've all heard politics is dirty. In fact, in this legal thriller to be published in March, winning a governor's race seems to involve covering up a rape / murder, killing a home intruder, silencing a witness and "offing' a blackmailer. Senator Grant tully is running against Attorney General Langdon Trotter for governor , and this contest gets relly dirty. Tully's electon specialist and loyal friend, Jon Soliday, is accused of at least one murder, though Tully and Jon's lawyer truly believe he is innocent. But Jon himself isn't sure. And why do the police suspect him of killing all of these people whom he barely know? This insider's tale of political chicanery and extreme embition is effectively told. Ellis has worked as an attoney for the speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, and his ability to create an authentic political mystery is impressive. Clearly, backroom deals and exchanges of political favors are the lifeblood of this world. Ellis, a former Edgar winner, fascinates us with the twisted morality and manipulative ability of both politicians and lawyers. Throughout htis carefully plotted mystery, there are also subtle but perceptive observations about friendship, loyalty, memory and guilt. For example, how honest is Jon's friendship with his boss? Is Jon himself guilty of a crime he can't remember? Is his lawyer's killing of a burglar justifiable homicide? How truly ethical are Grant Tully and langdon Trotter? This is a skillfully written crime story with some very believable characterizations. Recommended.-----400 pages-----$24.95-----Recommended by: MJS
