Chapter 21

Brian hadn’t noticed her get on the private jet. He hadn’t even noticed her sitting next in between Howie and AJ. He had notice Kevin alone, though.

“Hey, cuz, where’s Kris?” Brian asked, taking a seat next to his cousin. Kevin looked up at Brian for only a second before looking back down at his book.

“We took a break,” he answered, seeming to concentrate on his reading.

“Are you okay, man?” Brian asked, concerned. Kevin nodded and continued reading, so Brian tried again. “Wanna talk?” Kevin only shook his head. Sighing, Brian leaned his head back in his seat.

“Hey, does anyone know anything about computers?” Brian heard Nick ask from one of the metallic-silver couches.

“I do,” a familiar voice answered from one of the seats near the front. A moment later, Brian watched as an auburn head popped up and Kassy headed towards Nick.

What’s she doing here? he thought, furrowing his eyebrows. Who- Then it came to him. Howie. Scowling, Brian got up and headed for Kassy’ vacant seat as she sat down beside Nick. Before I sat down, I caught Kassy’s eye and glared at her. She narrowed her eyes back and turned to Nick.

What’s his problem? she thought, turning back to Nick. “What do you need help with?”

“Well, it’s actually more with the internet than the computer,” he explained, blushing slightly. No matter how long they’ve known each other, he was still shy around her. She found it adorable. “I was bored and I wanted to download some games to play. Once one started to load, my entire computer crashed.” Grimacing, Kassy took the laptop off his lap and placed it on her own. After clicking a few buttons, she scowled.

“Looks like you’ve managed to kill it,” she said, chuckling slightly. “It’s not too bad, though. You didn’t have anything important on here, did you?” Nick smiled meekly.

“I actually had a verse or two on there,” he said. “Changes to my song. I’m sure I can rewrite them, though.”

“That’s about the only thing you can do, sorry,” Kassy said. “Nothing on here is saved. There’re maybe one or two working programs on here, too. You should always save onto a disk, y’know.”

“I know, I just didn’t get a chance to yet,” he said, looking down at his hands. She smiled softly at him and lifted his chin so their eyes met.

“Don’t worry about it. Tell Howie that I said you could go into my bag and get a pad of paper,” she said. “I’ll work on fixing your computer.” His face lightened and she smiled at him.

“Thanks, Kassy,” he said.

“No prob, Bob,” she said, focusing her attention on the computer screen and keyboard. “Now, go get that paper and stop annoying me so I can do this.” The joking nature in her voice made him laugh and he got up, walking over to the front row of seats. Kassy worked in for a few moments in silence until it was unavoidably broken.

“Is there some reason you’re here?” Kassy didn’t even look up at the sound of Leighanne’s voice.

“I’m here with Howie,” she said, keeping her attention focused on her work. Talking back to Leighanne was becoming second nature. She didn’t need to think to be able to do it. The blonde added another remark.

“Oh, you must be his new f*ck buddy.”

“Word must have gotten out fast.” Taken aback by Kassy’s remark, Leighanne stared at her, wide-eyed. She hated it when people got the best of her. She decided to try again.

“So, how long is he gonna keep you around?” she asked, proud of herself for such a rude comment.

“Two months and three days.” Again, Kassy’s answer was nonchalant and included no thought.

“Only for that little time?” Leighanne retorted after a few moments of blinking her eyes in confusion.

“Yeah, AJ figured he’d need me afterwards so when Howie’s done with me, I’m moving over to AJ’s house.” AJ, who had been listening to the whole conversation decided to yell from the back of the plane.

“Woo hoo!!” he cheered, causing Kassy to smirk, but not getting her attention off the computer.

“You shut up!” Leighanne barked. AJ hissed at her and slunked down in his seat when she turned her glare on him. After turning her glare back to Kassy, Leighanne retreated to her seat in defeat. It wouldn’t do Kassy any good to be proud. It was way too easy.
