A DAYTON PLACE

This is one of many Dayton places....

img

This is a Dayton place in the cyberworld, in the mind, and in dimensions beyond the third. At the very least, it is a reflection of the past, present, and future of a small part of the real world "out there somewhere." It's the vicinity where two men once discovered key elements needed for humans to approximate the flight of birds.

We speak here only of a tiny part of the real world, and we speak only of a reflection. As with any reflection, what is seen may be clouded by dust or distorted by faults in the mirror. There may be things hidden from view or visible only from an indirect angle. There is no claim to any perfection or completeness in the view. There is only the once discovered ability not only to stay aloft but to turn in mid-air and go in another, different direction by a creature without wings...and a meager reflection of about a square mile of land.

Anyone can enter this cyber place, and to symbolize that this must begin with an image of an entry-way. Something old but substantial would seem to be appropriate. Note: pertinent links on these pages are all grouped at the bottom of each page.

The "West Side" and "Edgemont" areas of Dayton, Ohio -- to be using older names familiar to many -- were what might be called the "home territory" of the Wright Brothers and their friend, Paul Laurence Dunbar. The area of interest in the two neighborhoods together might be a little over a square mile, just a few blocks, in other words, of the many square miles of Dayton itself, a few blocks west of the Great Miami River and south of Wolf Creek, one of it's tributaries.

At the beginning of the 20th Century there were a lot of things there and there still is a lot. There is much to wander through, many names to name such as the important "Gem City Ice Cream Company" and the more remote "Sucher Meat Packing Company." Other names, including people, can be expected to be scattered about on various pages. A "key" name to be brought up is "Holy Name Church and School" since it has been used for community services purposes and so seems immediately to be suited to be a likely anchor point.

No doubt the words "Holy Name" have been used many times in many places down through the centuries as a name. In this instance it's used to designate a Dayton place that, to a certain extent, has been used for more than the church and school originally intended. To a certain extent it became ethnic to more than one group; and, included in that there were elements of the now non-existent but once formidable Empire of the Hapsburgs. For the record, the name of that country for an important period of time was Austria-Hungary or the Dual Monarchy and it included something like sixteen different nationalities.

"...Everything is gone," someone has said. Not quite, some things are left.

The "Holy Name complex" was located not far from both the Wright Brothers Bicycle Shop and the Paul Laurence Dunbar House. And, as has frequently happened with such complexes, in a limited capacity this be a community institution with positive aspects. In this case, there is no longer a functioning "Holy Name Church And School"; but, it does still exist in a sense. And, it can easily exist again in the cyberworld as not only one anchor for some of the remaining positive spirit, but also as a new development. It is hoped this "website" can be a humble and very preliminary effort to that end as well as at least a source of some informaion for interested folks.

Some things are left. And, as long as some things are left, there are foundation stones. Perhaps, if people look, things can be found to go with those stones. Let us hunt there, and perhaps here.

There is, then, an over-all idea/reason for this site. Below is a list of what might eventually be included. It's also necessary to mention somewhere that toward the bottom of each page there is a link to the next page and the LINKS (but not email) do connect. If someone would like to include something else other than the proposed material, please submit it for consideration (there is an email address somewhere in these pages that does work in the ordinary fashion). If there be more than one such place as this, perhaps things can be combined or specialized. Meanwhile, things will proceed as indicated. Although seriously still under construction, this site was first created early in December, 2002.

A little about me in here would seem to be in order. My name is Carolyn Rose Meszaros, usually simply put as Carolyn Meszaros -- a mouthful concocted by a well-meaning but slightly mis-calculating mother, but not impossible once one gets the hang of it. My family is/was related to no other Meszaros group in the area (over the years there may have been as many as a half-dozen different families with the same name) or, as is known, anywhere else in the United States (the name is a trade name and not particularly rare in the original language).

My grandparents, George (Gyorgy) and Mary (Maria) Meszaros, settled in West Dayton near the year 1900. As I understand it, he worked at Dayton Malleable & Iron Co. Both died by 1930. We were, however, related to people named Virag, Gabay/Gabai, and Fodor(?current spelling).

I, personally, grew up in Westwood and never was into shopping at the stores or visiting other businesses, hanging out at any of the places people frequented or attending any events except on very rare occasions such as a funeral at the church. We did go to movies at the Mecca Theater and visit friends and relatives who lived in the area. We subsequently moved to Residence Park for several years. (My maternal grandparents lived in Indiana; paternal relatives lived in various states including Illinois, Georgia, and California.) I live in the Greater Cincinnati area.

SPECIAL NOTE:

At the present time this site does not readily come up in an ordinary search engine search except as "A Dayton Place." (I'm not well versed in website building; but, I'm working on the problem.) Both my name and my ID (moniker) can be found attached to lesser matters; but, not this site. THEREFORE, to find the site, it's necessary to get the web address (url) from somewhere else and copy and paste it in the address bar or type in the entire thing in the address bar. Until the situation can be adjusted, the only thing to do seems to be to continue building as is.
