SI, Depression, and Anxiety Terms Defined

Abnormal-- (Adj) Different from the norm or average. Unusual.

Anxiety
--(N)
feelings of apprehension, uneasiness, agitation, uncertainty, and fear resulting from the anticipation of some threat or danger, usually of intrapsychic rather then external origan whose sourece is genarly unknown or unrecognized.

Cut-- (V) To deliberatly injure your self with sharp objects, like razor blades, usuallly done to relive stress, anger, or other intense emotions, not done as a suicide attempt. Note: This is a type of unhealthy and addictive coping skill.

Cutter-- (N) A person who deliberatly injures him/her self, in order to cope with intense emotions. These people are not suicidal and usually suffer from depression and/or anxiety. Note: This is a 'street' term.

Dissociate-- (V) An unconscious defense mechanism by which an idea, thought, emotion, or other mental process is separated from the conciousness and thereby loses emotional significance.

Depression-- (N) An abnormal emotional state charecterized by exaggerated feelings of sadness, melancholy, dejection, worthlessness, emptiness, and hopelessness that are inapropriate and out of proportion to reality.

DSH-- (N) Deliberate Self Harm Syndrome

Normal-- (Adj) Conforming to the standard or average for a particular group. Mentally or emotionally sound.

Numb-- (Adj) Not being able to feel any feelings or, severe anxiety dominating your body blocking out all other feelings.

P-Doc-- (N) Psychiatrist Note: This is a 'street' term.

SI-- (V) (Self Injur) To deliberatly injur one's self by any means possible, not done as a suicide attempt. Similer to cut. Note: This is a 'street' term.

Self Mutilate-- (V) See SI. Note: Most cutters and SI'ers don't like to use this term because of what mutilate implies.

Suicide-- (N) The intentional taking of one's own life.

Trigger-- (N) That wich sets off an episode of depression, anxiety, or SI. Note: This is a 'street' and medical term.

Weapon-- (N) Any sharp object used for cutting or SIing, like a razor blade or shard of glass. Note: This is a 'street' and medical term.
