
Binocularity includes alignment of the eyes and mechanisms for coordinated movement of both eyes (disparity-controlled convergence), fusing images received from both eyes into one image (sensory fusion), and depth perception (steropsis).
Binocularity requires the development of the cortical, rather than the subcortical, system and usually develops suddenly at around 3-4 months old. Adult-comparable binocular vision can be seen in children 4-5 years old. Binocularity can be measured by vision evoked responses (VEP's) to the onset and offset of binocular correlation in a large-screen dynamic random dot display.
