Egg Carton Flower

MATERIALS:

•egg cartons
•several colors of tissue paper cut into 1 1/2" by 10" strips
•tempera paints
•green pipe cleaners (chenille stems)
•white school glue
•scissors to pierce hole into bottom of egg carton cup and to shape cup.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.Adult should cut away each cup from the egg carton before starting this activity with the children. For younger children adult can shape the egg carton cup to resemble the petals of a flower without cutting into the sides too far to maintain the cup shape. Just round off the four sides of the cup to look like a petal, leaving the base in tact.
2.Pierce the bottom of the cup with sharp point of scissors or knife. Insert green pipe cleaner and knot one end so it will not pull through the base of the flower.

3.The children roll up the tissue paper up to create a 1 1/2 petal. After rolling the paper glue it to the inside of the egg carton.Continue rolling up different colors of tissue paper and gluing inside the cup until it is filled with petals.

4.Let the children paint the outside of the egg carton flower with tempera paint. (Try using q-tips to paint with or small sponges, this requires less paint and seems less messy.)

5.Let the children make several of these flowers to create a bouquet.

TIP: On another day, let children decorate frozen juice cans with tissue paper or toilet paper tubes to create a vase for the flowers.
