Crescent Kicks

I made an exception to my lifestyle last night and went to Tae Kwon Do club on a school night, bringing Kirstin along with me. She got her homework done so fast that when she begged to go out to Forest's club I couldn't resist her. Besides, I really wanted to go.

As soon as I walked in the door someone was strapping a Hogu and helmet on me and I was sparring. After a long and frustrating (not to mention tiring) round of constantly taking roundkicks to the ribs, I'm happy to say that I finally found something in Tae Kwon Do that I can rely on. It's maybe even a talent, although I'm not sure I'd go that far. Cornered and tiring fast, I faked a front kick, and when the block came down threw a crescent kick arcing to my opponent's head. Of course I didn't throw it full-force, but just hard enough to get the point across. People in the room cheered, and Forest actually complimented the kick. It was a happy thing.

Of course I'm sore today, but I'm pleased as punch. To top that off, I am learning a new form! I love those. Up until now I have been learning Tae Guk forms, and now I've got a Palgwe one to work on. Palgwe are neat, because they're older, and much more grand and forceful. They are a lot of exercise, but fun to do.

Today I'm on the road, so I'm writing this on my Palm Pilot's notepad, and hoping to upload it Wednesday morning. I love to travel for work, at least once or twice every couple of weeks. It's great to be out of my cubicle, and I thoroughly enjoy the time I spend driving in my minivan, all alone. I blast my music on the stereo, sing on top of my lungs, and watch the world fly by. Today I'm in Allegan county, just a stone's throw from Lake Michigan. I think I'll swing over there before I head back.

Tonight I have to bake a pie for Kirstin's class. Her teacher sent home a letter, assigning different parents certain items to prepare for the class Thanksgiving feast.

When I was a little kid, Thanksgiving in school (if we did it at all) consisted of popcorn balls and occasional pumpkin cookies. Kirstin's teacher, however, is really into details on this. I was assigned an apple pie, which irked me at first, because that's a lot of work on short notice, and I don't know HOW to bake a pie, and I'm a working parent, and don't have that much time!!! Then I saw that some poor woman had been assigned to make a turkey and stuffing, and I counted my blessings. I think I'd have a nervous breakdown if I had to try to prepare a turkey to serve at noon on a Wednesday. It just couldn't happen. So I'll quietly bake my pie, and thank the capricious Gods of the universe for sparing me from the greater evil.
