Pagan Goddess Newsletter - Issue #1 - August 21st, 2000

Merry Meet!
This is the very first issue of the Pagan Goddess Newsletter. As time goes on, the newsletter will get better, but still, I hope you enjoy this issue.
While some of the sections in this issue are empty, this was simply due to problems with some people's contributions, and my own personal problems. My apologies, and promises for a better issue next month.
Blessed Be!

Crystal Waterfall Meditation
Lady Amarissa WolfRose

This is a meditation method that you can use in the shower. It is simple, effective, and calming.
Works best when you are stressed, upset, sick or in pain. It is also a great way to keep your body clear of spiritual debris blockages.

Don't have the shower too hot or too cold, It needs to be a nice, relaxing temperature, that won't leave you shivering or drained of energy afterwards.

As the water pours over your head, imagine yourself standing under the most beautiful waterfall you have ever imagined. It glitters and shimmers with a pure, calming light. As the water pours over your head, see it cleansing your mind and body, the energy tracing it's way through your veins, reaching each part of yourself - both within and without.

See the water washing away all the stress, unhappiness, depression, sickness and pain, washing it away to never be seen again. As the water runs off you and down the drain, know that all your problems have been washed away into oblivion. Begin to open your chakra points, using the following method.

See the center of your forehead glowing - this is the 3rd eye chakra. As it glows, the water washes it clean. I often find that the source of my headaches is because my 3rd eye chakra is blocked.

Imagine the water running down in a straight line from your 3rd eye chakra to the middle of your throat. Again, see it glowing, then being washed clean by the water.

Repeat this procedure for the remaining chakras. If there are two chakras opposite each other (such as hands and feet), see the water split into two seperate streams, wash them clean, then join back together.

The remaining chakras are as follows:
Heart - center of chest
Solar Plexus - around the stomach/abdomen area
Hands - take a guess
Sacral - at the base of the spine, or on the gentials Feet - have another guess

The water washes each of the chakras clean of everything, leaving them glowing brightly and healthly.

Now see your body being bathed in soft white water. As this water runs off you, it takes with it all the negative energies that are around you. It clears your body of sickness, and bathes your skin in a radiant glow.

Take as long as you like with this. The longer the better. There is no special way to end this meditation techinque - just step out of the waterfall/shower. :)

If you were feeling sick prior to this meditation/shower, go to bed and lie down. When you are sick, there is no such thing as 'too much sleep'. If your body needs it, give it rest.

Remember also, that there is no such thing as a quick fix to any problem, including stress and depression. This is just a simple technique to help you deal with it.

Blessed Be!

Ritual to Find and Meet Your Animal Guide
Lady Amarissa WolfRose

Needed:
- 1 candle
- a rock or stone
- a feather
- a bowl of water
- a pentacle

~*~*~
Note - the candle can be any color. Chose what you think is best.
The rock/stone and feather you need to of picked up from nature yourself.
The bowl should be filled with either distilled or mineral water. But if you can get water from a stream, this is great! If you can't get either, then put several icecubes in the bowl about 1 hour before the ritual. They don't need to be melted totally.
If you don't have an altar pentacle, the draw one on a piece of paper. Decorate around it with any symbols you feel drawn to draw.

~*~*~
Prepartion:
You need to have a clear calm mind. It would be best to not do this ritual after a very stressful day.

Anoint your body with your favorite essential oils. It would be good to wear a pentacle or ankh, or any other piece of jewellry that protects you - try to limit it to only a necklace and a ring or bracelet.

~*~*~
The Ritual:
Sit comfortably on the floor, on a cushion if you like. Have all the objects in front of you. Close your eyes and clear your mind for a moment, then pick up the candle and light it.

"This is the element of fire. May it give me strenght and protection."

Place it on your right side (about an arms length from your body).

Pick up the stone/rock.

"This is the element of earth. May it give me wisdom and grounding."

Place this on your left side.

Pick up the feather.

"This is the element of air. May it give me intution, and spiritual guidance."

Place this on your left side, about an arms length behind you.

Pick up the bowl of water.

"This is the element of water. May it open me to change and inner knowledge."

Place this on your right side, an arms length behind you.

Place the pentacle in front of you, and put your hands on it while saying

"This is the spirit of all, the Divine. May it protect me, and guide me inside myself."

You should notice that the objects form a pentacle around you.

Gradually slow your breathing, and relax your body. It is important to not rush any part of this ritual, but to take your time. It doesn't matter how long you take - your guide will still be there, waiting for you.

When you are ready, see yourself standing before a curtain. Visualise yourself reaching out and pushing the curtain aside. There is a door behind the curtain. See yourself slowly opening it. Step over the threshold, into the mist beyond.

As you walk through the mist, it starts to thin, and you can see a light ahead. This may be day light, it may be moonlight. It all depends on your inner self.

Remember, you are going inside yourself, to your own little inner spiritual sanctuary. You don't decide where you are going or what you see. Your soul decides for you. So don't try to think, just let it happen.

When the mist has cleared, see the type of nature that stretches before you. You might be floating in the sky, or you might be wading through a river, standing on a cliff, or walking through a forest.

If you feel compelled to walk somewhere, then start walking. If you feel you need to just sit and wait, then do so. If you have no idea on what to do or where to go, just let yourself be silent inside, and wait until you think you know where to go.

When you get to where you need to go, you'll know. Something inside you will just know that you are meant to be. When you are there, wait. This is where your animal guide wants to meet you, so now you must wait until your animal guide decides to reveal itself.

Here in your inner place, time has no meaning. The sun doesn't rise in the morning - it rises when it rises. Simple as that. The stars shine not when it's night, but when they shine. Because of this, you must just sit and wait. While you are waiting, think about what you want to ask your guide. Think about what a beautiful place this is. Feel the sun or moon on your face, the breeze or water on your skin. Try, however, to not think about what kind of animal your guide will be.

When the time is right, your guide will appear to you. You may see other animals before you see your guide, but you will know without a single doubt when you see your guide.

Treat it as a friend. Don't be shy or scared - even if your guide turns out to be the animal you are scared of (like a snake or a spider or a worm). This guide is a part of you. It has been chosen to protect and teach you. Show it respect, honor and love.

Ask your guide a simple question at first, like what it's name is. It may tell you, or it may give you instructions on how to find out its name. You may hear the voice in your head, or you may just 'know' what it is telling you. Let it speak, and let yourself hear, not with your ears, but with your heart.

Don't be in a rush to know everything about your guide. They will reveal things to you when you are ready. If you want to know if you have more than one guide, ask. Again, you will either be told, or given instructions on how to find out. Take note, your guide may refuse to answer any of your questions. You must ask yourself why. If you feel that you must find out on your own, and that this is a lesson from your guide, then explore the land you are in. (You should explore this place anyway.)

Somewhere in the terrain you are in will be a shrine or temple of some sort. This is your inner place of worship. This sacred place will belong to you only, and it is your responsibility to keep it a place worthy of the presence of the Divine. If you find this temple, you should start right away to make it into a holy place, and leave an offering for your animal guide.

This temple can be anywhere - under the ocean, on a cloud, in a little grove in the forest, on a mountain cliff, behind a waterfall. You will know where it is.

Here in your innerplace, you can do anything. If your inner place is the ocean, you can swim. If it is the sky, you can fly like an eagle. No matter the land, the animals won't attack you.

Once you have met with your guide, they will decided for how long your conversation will go. When it is time for you to leave, they will tell you, or else you will feel that you need to. They may give you instructions on how to make a permanent link with them. Often this is in the form of a peice of jewellry that you are to wear all the time.

To leave, wander back through your innerplace, until you reach the door you first came through.

Go through it, making sure to close it behind you, then shut the curtains. Slowly open your eyes, and let yourself come back to the 'real' world.

Take note of everything you have seen. I highly suggest that you write down the following as soon as you have finished the ritual, before you even move from the place you are sitting.

Color and Design of the Curtains:
Description of the Door:
Terrain/Landscape:
Time of Day/Night in your place (roughly):
Location of your Temple:
Location of you Guide/s:
Your Guide's Name:
Description of the Guide:
What was said:
Anything else you feel is important:

This is very important, as it may give you further insight into your inner place, the instructions from your guide, and other things.

Note about the temple - in your temple, you may find books, scrolls, symbols, and other things.
Take note of everything you see, it may be important. Engravings and symbols are especially important.
Also, your temple may not be a 'temple' in every sense of the word. It could be a tree or a rock you are connected to, or a lake or a field. It is simply a place where you go to be connected to everything around and inside of you.

Be warned,
some negative spirits can latch themselves onto you and follow you to your inner place. They are not likely to follow you on your first journey - but they may try on your next journeys. If this happens, you will see signs that they are there. To get rid of them you must find your animal guide, go to your temple, and your guide will tell you how to get rid of them. It will be a spiritual battle, and in some cases you CAN get physically hurt. But no matter what, your animal guide will stand by you, and together you can win.

Note - if you want, this ritual can be performed lying down. You must spread your legs and arms until your body forms a pentagram shape.

The objects are placed like so:
Candle - near right hand
Stone/Rock - near left hand
Feather - near left foot
Water - near right foot
Pentacle - above your head

Note - After you have established a strong link with your animal guide, you can call upon it during ritual.
Your guide will help to add power to your rituals, as well as protection and wisdom.
Sometimes, your animal guides will be with you at all times. Mine, for example, accompany me always, unless of course I ask them for privacy. When I am entering a dangerous situation, they circle me, and as they circle, energy comes up from the ground and them, forming a shimmering sphere around me.
When I am sad they comfort me, and at night when I go to sleep they lie around me and watch over me.
To my, my animal guides are my Gaurdian Angels, and my best friends - I wouldn't have it any other way!

Well, happy animal finding!
Blessings,
~*~*~Lady Amarissa WolfRose~*~*~

Animal Magick

The Spider - Creature of Wisdom and Creativity
By Lady Amarissa WolfRose

Magickal Attributes
Creativity, Wisdom, New Life, Being Industrious, Divine Inspiration,
Beginning a new project, New Alternatives, Patience, Balance, Precision.

"Webs of beauty and purpose,
Dew-gemmed and rainbow-wrapped,
The spider never questions its creative ability.
O Deities of Earth and sky, the four directions,
Help me to be creative with such confidence."

Influences of the Spider In Different Cultures and Religions

To the Native American Indians, Grandmother Spider kept and taught the mysteries of the past and how they were affecting the future.

In India, the spider was associated with Maya, the weaver of illusion.

The spider has connections to the Fates in Greek mythology, and the Norns in Scandinavian lore -
women who would weave, measure, and cut the threads of life.

The Japanese have two spider Goddesses - Spider Woman (who can ensare careless travellers)
and the Goblin Spider (who can change shape to harm people).

"Patterns of life caught in time,
Fate weaver show me the sign
Spider spins the creature's eternal web
Be one inside listen to what is said."

Superstitions

Many folk tales around the world still portray the spider as lucky, a creature who can spin money, but who is also crafty and cunning.

- The dance called the tarantella was originally the specified cure for the bite of the tarantula spider.

- Some people believe that if you kill a spider it will rain.

- A cobweb is said said to stop bleeding when laid on a wound.
This really works if the cut isn't too deep.

- In the United States, if a girl finds a cobweb on her door, her boy friend is seeing another girl.

- If a spider falls on you from the ceiling, it is good luck. If you find one crawling on your clothes, money is coming. This is especially true if it is the little red "money spider".

- If you see a spider spinning a web, you will get new clothes.

- There is an old saying, "If you wish to live and thrive, let the spider run alive.".

- In Britian and many parts of Europe it was once believed that swallowing a piece of web, eating a crushed spider, or wearing a bag of live spiders around the neck would cure whooping cough, gout, ague and asthma.

"Spider...weaving webs of delight,
Weave me a peaceful world.
Carrying creation in your web,
Waiting to be unfurled."

If the spider weaves its way into your life, it may mean that you need to be cautious, and be careful to not get caught in a dead end in life. Spider means that you should weave creativity into all parts of your life, be it work, family or anything else. Be like the Spider, patient, industrious, and take the time needed to make yourself and your life into a work of art.
Call on the Spider for Divine Inspiration and Creativity, Wisdom and Balance.

Goddess Reflections

"Artemis" by Antianara

The Greek Goddess Artemis is a multifaceted virgin Goddess.
She was born of Zeus and Leto, and is the twin sister to Apollo.
She is mostcommonly known as a Moon Goddess and Goddess of the Hunt.
She is the Patron Goddess of the Amazons and Her day of worship is the 6th day of the New Moon.

As a Moon Goddess, they say She rides Her silver chariot, pulled by silver stags across the sky, and shoots Her arrows of silver moonlight to the Earth below.
As the Goddess of the Hunt, She is the protectress of wild places and wild animals.
She loves to roam the forests and knows the deep places in Nature where one can relax and regain strength.
She is often seen followed bywild beasts and loves singing and dancing with her nymphs.

Physically, She is often depicted carrying a silver bow and arrow made by Hephaestus and the Cyclopes and sometimes is depicted with a crescent moon above Her forehead.
Artemis is one of three Goddesses immune to Aphrodite's enchantments (the other two being Hestia and Athena).
She prides herself on Her chastity and punishes those who attempt to dishonor Her.
One myth tells of Actaeon who snuck upon the Goddess and Her nymphs while they were bathing.
He did not turnaway, instead creeping closer and when he was caught, Artemis turned him into a stag and Her hounds tore him to pieces.
Another tells of Orion who attempted to rape Her. In one version, Artemis kills him with Her bow and arrow and in another, She conjures up a scorpion that kills him and his dog, Sirius.
They are both turned into constellations.

Though a virgin, Artemis is also considered a Goddess of Fertility and Childbirth. She was said to be the protectress of women in labor, but it was said that it was Her arrows that brought them sudden death during or immediately after.
Artemis and Her brother Apollo are healing deities, but She has also brought about diseases such as rabies and leprosy.

Callisto is one of Artemis' titles used to denote Her connections with the bear, one of Her sacred animals.
She is also known as the "Hunter of Souls" and a shape-shifter.
Artemis is often identified with Diana, the Roman Goddess of the Moon.

Trees sacred to Artemis: Almond, Bay Laurel, Cedar, Cypress, Fir, Myrtle, Rowan, and Willow.

Herbs sacred to Artemis: Aster, Daisy, Hyacinth, Moonwort, Mugwort, and Wormwood.

Animals sacred to Artemis: Deer/Stags, geese, wild dogs, fish, goats, bees, quail, and bears.

Hecate's Oracle

Q.
I've heard alot about making brews and drinks from herbs, and I was wondering just how safe it is.
How do you know whether the brew you make is going to hurt you in anyway, and where do you get the herbs from?

- Anonymus

A.
Normally herbs are very safe, unless you are allergic to them.
I would not reccomend making your own ingestible brews unless you *really* know what you are doing. Follow tried and true recipies, and you should be fine.
I make my own teas often.
As for where to get them, herbs are usually available in your grocery stores. Look in the produce section. And if you buy them there, you know you are geting edible herbs.
Hope that helps!
Love,
Beth

The Magick Circle

Recommended Books:

Wicca: A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner - Scott Cunningham
Published by Llewellyn
It is a great book for beginners, as well as non-pagans who want to know what Wicca is. It contains descripitions and definititons of Wiccan and Shamanism, gives ideas and guidelines for ritual and preparation for ritual, great techiniques for learning and sharpening your magick and visualisation skills, and a small Book of Shadows that contains herbal recipes, incenses, oils, chants, and Sabbat celebrations.

To Ride A Silver Broomstick - Silver RavenWolf
Published by Llewellyn
I couldn't put this book down when I got it (which grew into me skipping school to learn about Wicca instead of maths, english and science). Silver RavenWolf is one of my favorite authors, and this was the first book I bought that was written by her. Silver Broomstick has everything you could want, from how to start in Wicca, stocking your magickal supplies, defining the All, the differences between fortune telling and divination, Color and Candle Magick, Gems, Herbs and Healing, and coming out of the Broom Closet.
It's great for the beginner Witch as well as the practised one.

This site is really informative. It's not just about Wicca or Paganism, but also has things about Buddhism (typos..its really early in the morning - 5:23am) and other religions. I think that this site really shows the meaning of the sayings "Love is the law, no matter the religion" and "Freedom of religion means ALL religion". Focuses too on homosexual Pagans and Wiccans, which I think is important.

Voice of a Pagan Goddess

The Spring Fairy
~*~Lady Amarissa WolfRose~*~

She weaved among the flowers,
Her feet barely touching the Earth.
Her voice was lifted high,
As she sang and danced there was birth.

She sang a song of the Seasons,
She sang of night and day,
And as she caressed the flowers,
Winter was chased away.

Her wings sparkled in the sunlight,
They shimmered like tiny rainbows,
She was like a tiny angel
From which all spring-life flows.

She is the Fairy of the Spring,
The one that makes flowers bloom,
She sings the songs of life,
Chases away Winter's gloom.

Her voice is like the sound of rain,
Her eyes are like a new sunrise,
She is a beauty of the Earth,
The one in which Spring lies.

She gives birth to the flowers,
She warms the frozen Earth,
Her voice is warm and gentle,
Her heart is filled with mirth.

"Winter come and Winter go,
Winter shall never remain,
Snow and Cold shall go away,
Warmth and Sun shall come again!"

The Craft of the Craft

There are two methods I know of for making you own oils. While I myself haven't tried the second method, it was sent to another list by my Sister.

Method One
Place orange peel, fresh rose petals, mint leaves or whatever you want the fragrance to be in roughly 1/2 cup of light olive oil. Place this in a warm spot (like in the sun) for about two days, or until you can smell the fragrance in the oil.

Method Two
Take the herb or flower and crush it in a mortar and pestal.
Then take a amber colored or cobalt blue glass(must be glass) jar, or bottle, pour 1/2cup of olive oil in it, add the herb or flower, secure tightly, and place in a cool dark place for 2 weeks.
After two weeks strain the mixture into another bottle through either a coffee filter or cheesecloth.
All oils must be kept in a dark cool place or they can go rancid.
~*~*~The Lady Raven~*~*~

Just a small note - if you plan to make garlic oil like I did, well just be warned, make it outside, and leave it near a well ventilated room, because it makes the house smell like urine or cat wee. - Lady Amarissa WolfRose

How To Make Powders

I've included this section in case you weren't clear on how to make the powders featured in the Cauldron Wonders section.

It's quite easy. You get the talcum powder (if you can't get in it the colors, just get white - remember, substitue white for anything!), and whatever else you need.

You need to try to get a crushed herb form of the herb you need. Don't use oils - they will just make the talc go all chuncky and moist.

Mix the crushed herbs up with the talc, as well as the glitter (if the powder recipes says to).

Now you're ready to sprinkle!
