Microsoft Art Gallery is an entertaining program for those interested in art. Art Gallery
lets you browse through the collection of the National Gallery of London in different
ways. To learn about the collection chronologically, begin with the time and place atlas
and pick the time and then locations active in that period. Or, pick the area and see the
how styles and techniques changed as time passed.
The collection can also be viewed via the artist's lives section, which includes
biographies of the artists and depicts their works in the collection. Type of work can
also be chosen, i.e., religious, scenic, still life, etc. Being able to explore the
artwork by subject matter illustrates the changes in the way artists perceived and
depicted the world around them.
A glossary or reference section is included which defines the
terms, people, styles and other items of interest to help in understanding the collection.
Definitions of various art terminology and references to historical, mythological and
biblical figures aid in understanding the importance the artist placed on his subject and
the significance of various details in the painting.
