The Review:
One of Atlanta's most highly acclaimed restaurants, the Dining Room is the domain of
chef Guenter Seeger. Internationally renowned, Seeger received the coveted Michelin Star
rating for his restaurant in the Black Forest of Germany-one of the few restaurants
outside of France to be so honored. His traditional European haute-cuisine creations (with
American regional overtones) are magical, drawing the maximum of flavor from the very
freshest of ingredients.
Seeger's refined cuisine is a gem in a worthy setting. The Dining Room's
mahogany-paneled walls are hung with a museum-quality collection of gilt-framed British
hunt paintings. Diners sink into comfortable silk-upholstered armchairs and banquettes at
elegantly appointed tables adorned with stunning arrangements of Hawaiian
flowers-tropically hued orchids, birds of paradise, and anthurium. Shaded table lamps
provide soft lighting, and background music is classical. Service is impeccable ("The
waiters, the wine steward, all move in a well- orchestrated dance," raved one
reviewer).
Menus change daily. On a recent visit, I began with delicately cubed tuna ceviche with
cilantro and osetra caviar garnish in extra-virgin olive oil. It was followed by
grapefruit-garnished Gulf red snapper in a croustade of thinly sliced potatoes with citrus
vinaigrette. Next came a crispy fan of rosemary-garnished duck breast with date pure
in caramelized sherry-vinaigrette sauce. And dessert was a heavenly fig tart topped with
vanilla ice cream and garnished with fresh mint and raspberries. Everything is
sensational, and presentations, on white German Hutschenreuther china platters, are works
of art. A very comprehensive list of over 300 wines is dominated by French and California
selections, but also offers many German and Italian vintages. Master Sommelier Michael
McNeill, one of only 24 master sommeliers in the United States, oversees wine selections
and confers daily with Seeger to match wines for his prix-fixe menus.
