a box and a bucket

by Carol Armbrust 3/97

a box and a bucket rolled down a hill
after falling from the back of a truck
the corners of the box hit "da-donk da-donk"
leaving splinters stuck in the muck
except for a bent-up steel-wire handle,
the bucket didn't suffer quite as bad
now, lying on their sides - mouths agape,
the bucket and the box looked sad
soon came a man in need of a way
to haul water and searching for a pail
says to himself, "this bucket will do"
and it was off he was to the well
the fate of the box was decided next
'cause a boy with four wheels came along
he converted the box into a wagon
with the wheels and some nails and a thong
the boy "joy-riding" saw the struggling man,
he asked the man, "give your pail a ride?"
and off they went pushing and pulling
with water sloshing over each side.
