Welcome to the Crest Page!
Melinda Armbrust, as commissioned by her father, Rodger Armbrust, created a one of a kind crest for consideration by family members to serve as the Armbrust-Brust-Frey crest. The spirit behind making this crest was to unify the meanings of the names with the high ideals, values, and heritage of our family. Therefore, Rodger asked Melinda to include the traditional German crest symbol (lion) with the head armor and crossbow. This crest is not meant to symbolize our direct lineage or merely a region from where our ancestors once resided. We are also aware none of our families (Armbrust, Brust or Frey) were ever royalty. They were craftsmen and peasants. But since crests and landowning have long ceased to be exclusive to only royalty, we have created this one of a kind crest to represent our family.
Lions have always been used to mean courage. This symbol is often found on German crests. Armbrust means "crossbow," and those carrying this name either made or used crossbows. The crossbow symbol is always on any Armbrust family crest. Head armour usually signifies fealty to the king or loyalty and stands for someone who fights a battle astride a horse (a knight). Only freemen rode horses in battle. Frey means "freeman." The head armour also sports shoulder armour. Brust means "chest." This type of armour often appears on Frey and Brust family crests. (Regarding the Farney branch, as in Margaret Farney, wife of Frank Brust, Farney might derive from an English or Scottish background but also could come from a variant of the German name 'Farner' from the Southwest region of Germany. The only crest we found of Farney also included the head armor.) These graphics have been incorporated into the crest to mean: "Courage-Strength-Loyalty" (which is inscribed on the bottom banner) along with the German and American flags to symbolize the family's German and American heritage. People often think of castle parapets as a stronghold and here it is used to mean strength in the unity of family. The colors of the crest match the colors of the German flag. Across the top banner face is written the names of Armbrust, Brust, and Frey, the names of the family reunion.
