"Looking into your soul"

A short excerpt written for Kevin.

This was written sometime in the end of '97 or the beginning of '98.

It was a beautiful summer night. The stars were twinkling like lonesome diamonds in the clear night sky. It was just cool enough to give lovers a reason to snuggle close to one another but not cold enough to make a person's little nose rosy and numb. Two bodies, almost mirages, could be seen walking together, hand-in-hand, down the long wooden boardwalk, whispering lovely dreams and wishes to one another, hoping that the night would never end.

He gripped her hand tightly as they sauntered along the boardwalk. The heartbreaking stories that they shared about their absent fathers and the lack of love in their families always made them both very emotional. He felt like she knew what he was feeling. She had a way of connecting with him like no one else ever had. And like no one else ever would in his lifetime.

"So anyway, my dad and I had this really big argument on the way to the game. I had never seen him cry until that day. He upset me so bad," he said, staring straight ahead into the nothingness. "I got to the game and I put all of my heart into it. I pushed our argument out of my mind completely and I ended up playing the best game of my life."

His green eyes twinkled in the soft moonlight as he recalled his care free high school days. He was telling his story so intensely that it was all she could do to keep from shivering, as if she had lived it herself.

"We had two strikes, two outs, and two balls. I was the last batter up. It was up to me to win this game and I knew it. The ball came at me and my bat cracked it and it was gone. It was a homer all the way! When my dad heard that I hit that winning home run, he got up and started saying ‘That's my boy! That's my son out there!'" He looked down at her with tears in his eyes.

"That's the only time he's ever called me his son."

She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him like she never wanted to let go. How could this man be so perfect with her? She believed that God had put someone on this Earth that was meant just for her, and he might be the one.

As they looked into each other's eyes, they both recognized themselves in each other. The love they felt was so strong, so complete. They were one.
