"Envy"
written November 1997
Why can't I be like her?
With her long golden hair
And her light blue eyes
Everyone loves her
As she dances in front of them
Putting on a show of perfection
She doesn't notice me
Blending in with the shadows
Gazing at her performance
Envying her every move
They all love her
They all want to be like her
But is she really happy?
She lives in a world of lies
A real-life fairytale
She dresses up to please them
Paints herself to pure innocence
She smiles at their approving gazes
They are so proud of her
They wish they could be like her
Until one day they are swept with envy
But it is envy of a dark nature
A deep jealousy
She has it all
It comes naturally to her
Why can't I be more like her?
Soon she has no real friends
Only faithful followers
And she wallows in her loneliness
But hides it when they are around
She longs for a friend
But her foolish pride stops her
From opening up
To someone who could be just like her
But she'll never know
Because she's scared of saying the wrong thing
Being someone they don't like
She can't find her true self
She doesn't know how to act anymore
She is swept by envy of them
They can't see that they have what she can never have
They have security
They know who they are
They are not terrified of what they might encounter
She closes her eyes and dreams of another life
But no one knows
They're too busy envying someone
They don't even know.
