(A Psalm relating to the true David, Israel's Redeemer.)

(Psalm 22 is Christ as the sin offering; Ps 40 as the whole burnt offering; and this, Ps. 69 as the trespass offering. Verse 9 refers to John 15:25; vv.14-20 refer to Gethsemane [Matt. 26:36-45]; v21 to the Cross [Matt. 27:34,48. John 19:29]; vv.22-28 to Rom. 11:9,10; v.25 to Judas [Acts 1:20].)

1 Save me, O God;

For the waters (put for great troubles) are come in unto my soul. (I.e. threaten my life.)

2 I have sunk in deep mire, where there is no standing:
I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

3 I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried:
My eyes fail while I wait for my God.

4 They that hate me without a cause (cp. 55:19. Quoted in John 15:25) are more than the hairs of my head:
They that would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are stronger than my bones:
I restored that which I took not away.

5 O God, You know my foolishness;
And my sins are not hid from You.
6 Let not them that wait on You, O Lord GOD (Adonai Yahaveh) of hosts, be ashamed for my sake:
Let not those that seek You be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel. (See Isa. 29:23)

7 Because for Your sake I have borne reproach;
Shame has covered my face.

8 I am become a stranger to my brethren, (Cp. John 1:11.)
And an alien to my mother's sons.

9 For the zeal of Your house has eaten me up; (Quoted as fulfilled in John 2:17.)
And the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. (Quoted in Rom. 15;3)
10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting,
That was to my reproach.

11 I made sackcloth (put for mourning) also my garment;
And I became a proverb to them. (Cp. John 8:48. Matt. 27:63.)

12 They that sit in the gate speak against me;
And I was the mocking song of the drunkards.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, in an acceptable time: (I.E. at time You please)
O God, in the abundance (or plenitude) of Your loving-kindness (or grace)
Answer me, in the truth of Your salvation.

14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink:
Let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15 Let not the water-flood overflow me,
Neither let the deep swallow me up,
And let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

16 Hear me, O LORD; for Your grace is good:
Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies.
17 And hide not Your face from Your servant;
For I am in trouble: hear me speedily.
18 Draw nigh to my soul, and redeem it:

Deliver me because of my enemies.

19 You have known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonor:
My adversaries are all before You.

20 Reproach has broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness:

And I looked for some to take pity, but there was none;
And for comforters, but I found none.

21 They put me (Fulfilled in Matt. 27:34,35. Mark 15:23,36. Luke 23:36. John 19:28-30) also something bitter (probably the poppy. In Deut. 29;18; 32:33, it is rendered "venom"; in Job 20:16, "poison"; in Hos. 10:4, "hemlock") into my choice food;

And in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

22 Let their table become a snare before them:
And that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
(Imprecation. Suitable for a dispensation of Law and Judgment; not for this Day of grace. See Rom. 11:9,10. What was given to Jesus for drink on the cross? His crucifixion should have been for their welfare, but it will become a trap to many that worship the wrong messiah.)
23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not;
And make their loins continually to shake.

24 Pour out Your indignation upon them,
And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them.
25 Let their palace (a place surrounded by a wall) be desolate;
And let none dwell in their tents.
(Quoted in Acts 1:20. Take away all of their blessings.)

26 For they persecute him whom You have smitten;
And they talk to the grief of You wounded ones.

27 Add iniquity (put for the punishment deserved by it) to their iniquity:
And let them not come into Your righteousness.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of life,
And not be written with the righteous. (That is the book in heaven, friend. That is the book of which you never want to be blotted out. After Christ was placed in the tomb, He went to those which had been blotted out in the flesh in the prisons of their graves, as is written in I Peter 3:19. He gave those that had been blotted out from the time of Noah, a chance to place their name in the eternal book of life. There is a difference between blotting out under heaven and blotting out in heaven. It is important to understand this difference because it means the love of our Father won't allow souls to burn in hell forever as some would have you believe. Those that are spiritually blotted out will be erased from all memory.)

29 But I am afflicted (see Prov. 6:11. Not the same word as in v.33. Constantly used of Christ in the Psalms . Cp. 22:24; 34:6: 35:10; 40:17; 70:5; 109:16,22) and sorrowful:
Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.

30-36. PRAISE.

30 I will praise (the suffering never mentioned without the praise) the name of God (i.e. God Himself. Cp. Ps. 20:1) with a song,
And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.
31 This also shall please the LORD better (praise is the truest sacrifice) than an ox
Or bullock that has horns (showing full age; not under 3 years [Gen. 15:9]) and divided hoofs. (Showing it to be ceremonially clean [Lev. 11:3].)

32 The humble shall see this, and they rejoice:
And your heart (put for the whole being) shall live that seek God. (I.e. in resurrection. See Lev. 18:5.)

33 For the LORD hears the helpless,
And despises not His prisoners.

34 Let the heaven and earth (see Gen 14:9) praise Him,
The seas, and every thing that moves therein.

35 For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: (This is prophecy; for David was a "prophet" [Acts 2:30].)
That they may dwell there, and inherit it. (Not merely dwell and posses, but inherit and hand down.)

36 The seed also of His servants shall inherit it:
And they that love His name shall dwell therein.
