L4 P 1. The Women. Seeing. Q 2-4. The events at the Sepulcher. P 5-10. The Women. Seeking. Q 11-15. Events in the city.
1 In the late on the sabbath, (the weekly sabbath. The 7th day; not the high sabbath of v.62 or John 19:42, because that was the 1st day of the feast [following the "preparation day"]. See John 12:1) as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary (see 1:16) to gaze upon the sepulchre.
Q t 2-. Effect. Earthquake. u -2. Cause. Action. The Angel. u 3. Cause. Appearance. " t 4. Effect. Terror of the Watch.
2 And, behold, there happened a great earthquake:
for the angel of the Lord (Yehovah) descended out of heaven, and came and had rolled back the stone away from the door, and sat upon it. (Sat that it might be known by what power it was rolled back)
3 His general appearance was like lightning, (in effulgence) and His raiment white as snow:
4 And from fear of Him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. (i.e. dead persons as distinct from dead bodies)
P R v 5,6. Words of the angel. w 7. Their commission. S x 8-. Their departure. y -8. Their mission. R v 9,10-. Words of the Lord. w -10. His commission.
5 And the angel answered and said to the women, "Fear not you: for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 He is not here: for He is risen, according as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord was [lately] laying.
7 And go quickly, and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead; (pl. it denotes emphatically out from among the dead bodies, or corpses) and, behold, He goes before you to Galilee; there shall you see Him: lo, I have told you."
8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy;
and did run to bring His disciples word.
9 And as they were going to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus confronted them, (as from the opposite direction) saying, "All hail." And they came and seized Him by the feet, and prostrated themselves before Him.
10 Then said Jesus to them, "Be not afraid:
go tell My brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see Me."
Q z 11. The Watch. Their report. a 12. Bribe offered. z 13,14. The Watch. Report falsified. a 15. Bribe accepted.
11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and told to the chief priests all the things that had come to pass.
12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave sufficient money to the soldiers, (i.e. to bribe them with)
13 Telling them to say, "His disciples came by night, and stole Him away while we slept.
14 And should this come to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him, (i.e. bribe. Cp. Gal. 1:10) and free you from care. (i.e. make you safe, or screen you. Cp. 1 Cor. 7:32)
15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this story (see Mark 9:32) has been commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into the mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
17 And when they saw Him, they prostrated themselves before Him: but some hesitated.
18 And Jesus approached and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has just been given to Me upon heaven and in earth.
19 Go you therefore, and disciple all the nations, baptizing them into the name (not "names". This is the final definition of "the Name" of the One true God) of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you all the days, even until the completion of the age." Amen. (i.e. that then current dispensation, when this apostolic commission might have ended. But as Israel did not then repent [Acts 3:19-26; 28:25-28], hence all is postponed till Matt. 24:14 shall be taken up and fulfilled, "then the end of the age come". This particular commission was therefore postponed)
