1 And He entered again (i.e. on another Sabbath. Probably the next.) into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a hand withered. (Cp. Matt. 12:10)

2 And they were watching Him, whether He would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse Him.

3 And He said to the man which had the withered hand, "Rise up [and come] into the midst."
4 And He said to them, "Is it more lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save a soul, or to kill?" But they held their peace.
5 And when He had looked round about (noting the minutest action of Yehovah's Servant) on them with anger, being grieved (implying sadness accompanying the anger. A Divine supplement, here) at the hardening of their hearts (cp. Rom. 11:25. Eph. 4:18), He said to the man, "Stretch forth your hand." And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

6 And the Pharisees went forth, and immediately took counsel (see Matt. 12:14) with the Herodians against Him (see 12:13. Matt. 22:15), how they might destroy Him.

7 But Jesus withdrew Himself with His disciples toward the sea:

and a great multitude away from Galilee followed Him, and from Judaea,
8 And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea (south of Judea and Dead Sea), and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things He did, came to Him.

9 And He spoke to His disciples, that a small ship should wait on Him

on account of the crowd, that they might not throng Him.
10 For He had healed many; insomuch that they were besetting Him that they might touch Him, as many as had plagues.
11 And unclean spirits, when they beheld Him, fell down before Him, and cried out, saying, "You are the Son of God." (A divine supplement, here, because agreeing with the 2nd subject of the Lord's ministry)
12 And He straightly charged them (under penalty) that they should not make Him manifest.

13 And He goes up into the mountain (some well know resort), and calls to Him whom He Himself willed (cp. John 15:16): and they went, leaving all to Him.

14 And He appointed twelve, in order that they should be with Him, (This is the 1st great qualification of any thus called and sent. [1] Like Abel, to have "peace with God"; then [2] like Enoch, "to walk with God", and [3] like Noah, to witness for God" [Heb. 11:4-7])

and that He should send them forth to preach, (Gr. apostellō. This is the 2nd great qualification here. For the others, see above and Acts 1:22)
15 And to have authority to heal sicknesses, and to cast out demons:

16 And Simon he added the name Peter; (Only his naming given here; not his appointment. In Mark; Peter James and John are kept in a group. In Matthew and Luke, Andrew is placed in between)
17 And James the son of Zebedee (see 1:19), and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges (only occ. in Mark), which is, The sons of (a pure Hebraism, used with references to origin, destination, or characteristic. Sparks are "sons of fire" [Job 5:7]; threshed corn is "a son of the floor" [Isa. 21:10]; Judas "a son of perdition" [John 17:12]; sinners' natural condition "sons of disobedience" [Eph. 2:2; 5:6]) thunder: (= voice i.e. the voice of God [Ex. 9:23. Ps. 29:3. Jer. 10:13])
18 And Andrew (= manly. The 1st called. See Matt. 4:18,20. John 1:40,41), and Philip (= lover of horses), and Bartholomew (= son of Tolmai [a terrace]. 1 of 2 names, the other being Nathaniel = gift of God [John 1:45-51), and Matthew (to fight with [not against] God), and Thomas (he is the Judas of John 14:22; both words having the same meaning = beloved child), and James (= heel-catcher [same as Jacob]) the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite, (= Zealot = one who regarded the presence of the Romans as treason against Yehovah)
19 And Judas Iscariot, which even delivered Him up:

and they went into a house.

20 And the crowd comes together again, so that they found themselves unable so much as eat bread.

21 And when His kinsfolk ("His brethren, and His mother [see v.31]) heard of it,

they set out to lay hold on Him: for they were saying, (i.e. maintained [as we say])

"He is out of His senses."

22 And the scribes (Kenites, sons of Cain) which came down from Jerusalem said, (Others also came, with evil intent)

"He has Beelzebub (= dung-god, one of Satan's names. See Matt. 10:35), and by the prince of the devils casts He out demons.

23 And He called them to Him, and began saying to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan?
24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom is not able to stand. (Implying what experience shows)
25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
26 And if Satan has risen up against himself (assuming such a case), and be divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. (A Divine supplement. Occ. only in Mark)
27 No one in any way able to enter into the strong man's house, and plunder his vessels [of gold and silver], except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will plunder his house.

28 Truly I say to you, All sins shall be forgiven to the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit (i.e, ascribe the Holy Spirit's work, or Christ's work, to Satan. This is the unpardonable sin) has not to the age forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal judgment."
30 Because they said, "He has an unclean spirit." (This is the reason given)

31 There came then His brethren and His mother,

and, standing outside (so that they more easily seize Him [v.21]), sent to Him, calling Him.
32 And the multitude was sitting about him, and they said to Him, Behold, your mother and your brethren without seek for You.

33 And He answered them, saying, "Who is My mother, or My brethren?"
34 And He after casting His glance round (a Divine supplemental detail. Occ. only in Mark) on them which were sitting about Him, and said, "Behold my mother and my brethren!
35 For whosoever shall have done the will of God, the same is My brother, and My sister, and mother."
