Luke 10)

(Verses 1-16 are peculiar to Luke.)

1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also (God's elect + double witness. 1/2 = 35 = hope), and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, wherever He Himself was about to come.
2 Therefore said He to them, "The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He may send forth laborers into his harvest. (Work at it all the time)

3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs (trust your Shepherd) in the midst of wolves. (The world today)
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip (a beggars collecting bag), nor sandals (i.e. a 2nd pair): and greet no man by the way. (Don't waste time)

5 And into whatsoever house you may enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house.' (The usual salutation. Cp. Judg. 19:20)
6 And if indeed (a condition of uncertainty) the son of peace be there (a Christian. Find out if it is a Christian home), your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as are with them they give: for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Go not out of house to house. (Don't waste time socializing. Do God's work)
8 And into whatsoever city you may enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
9 And heal the sick that are in it, (ask Christ to heal)

and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is drawn near to you.' (Do this publicly)

10 But into whatsoever city you may enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
11 'Even the very dust out of your city, which cleaves (a medical term, used of uniting the wounds) on us, we do wipe off our feet against you:

notwithstanding get to know of this, that the kingdom of God is drawn near to you.' (Its going to happen whether they receive it or not.)

12 But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day (Judgment Day) for Sodom, than for that city.
13 Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! (cities of Satan) for if the powers had taken place in Tyre and Sidon (example, Jonah and the Ninevites), which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth (a coarsely woven material used for sieves and strainers [worn next to the skin in mourning], Isa. 3:24. Job 16:15. 1 Kings 21:27. 2 Kings 6:30; not laid aside at night, Joel 1:13. Cp. Isa. 20:2,&c.) and ashes. (Also a sign of mourning. God judges heavily those that touch His anointed.)
14 However it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment, than for you.
15 And you, Capernaum, shall you be exalted to the heaven? you shall be thrust down to hell.

16 He that hears you hear Me (excellent credentials); and he that rejects you rejects Me; and he that rejects Me rejects Him that sent Me." (Be gentle but firm)

10:17-20. THE JOY OF THE SEVENTY.
Z¹ x 17-. Joy. Manifestation.
y -17-19. Cause. Subjection of Spirits.
    x 20-. Joy. Dehortation.
y -20. Cause. Names written in heaven.

17 And the seventy returned again with joy,

saying, "Lord, even the demons are subdued to us through Your name." (No other way. Cp. 2:51. 1 Cor. 15:27,28. Eph. 11:22. Phil. 3:21)
18 And He said to them, "I beheld Satan (= the Adversary, the Accuser. 1 Sam. 29:4) as lightning (See Rev. 10:3; 9:4) having fallen from the heaven. (This is looking forward to the coming of the spurious messiah defacto in the 6th trump. Should you be fearful of antichrist at that time and his evil spirits that exist today?)
19 Behold, I have given to you authority (God's Word) to tread on serpents and scorpions, and upon all the might of the enemy (Satan): and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (So what are you afraid of? Christ gives you power over serpents, or evil spirits, and the scorpions of Rev. 9. Check out the second word "power" in this verse in your Strong's Concordance. It is different from the first "power" in this verse in the manuscripts. You will find it is the Greek word "dunamis" (doo-nam-is) and means miraculous power. Yes, Christ even gives you power over the supernatural power of antichrist. I hope you find this as reassuring as I do. Take names and kick dragon. Doing so in the name of Jesus Christ, of course.)

20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject to you; (in His name)

but rather rejoice, because your names have been written in the heavens." (The Lamb's Book of life. If your name is not written in heaven, you do not have the power to begin with. The only way to obtain the power is to love and serve the Lord.)

that You did hid these things from the wise and prudent, and did reveal them to babes: even thus, Father; for so it was well-pleasing before You.

22 All things were delivered to Me by My Father: and no man gets to know Who the Son is, except the Father; and Who the Father is, but the Son,

and he to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."

23 And He turned Himself to His disciples, and said privately, "Happy are the eyes (put for the whole person) which see the things that you see:

24 For I say to you, that many prophets (Abraham [Gen. 20:7; 23:6], Jacob [Gen. 49:18]) and kings (David [2 Sam. 23:1-5]) have desired to see those things which you see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which you hear, and have not heard them.

26 He said to him, "What stands written in the law? (see Matt. 5:17) how [do] you read [it]?"

27 And he answering said, "You shall love the Lord (Yahaveh) your God (Elohim) with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."

28 And He said to him, "You have answered rightly: this do (no one ever did, because the Law was given that, being convicted of our impotence, we might thankfully cast ourselves on His omnipotence. Cp. Rom. 7:7-13), and you shall live."

(Verses 29-37 peculiar to Luke)
29 But he, desiring to justify himself,

said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" (Cp. Matt. 5:43. Lev. 19:18)

30 And Jesus taking him up (= taking [the ground] from under him) said, "A certain man went down (in more senses than one. The road was a steep descent. Cp. 19:28) from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers (see Matt. 26:55. John 18:40), which stripped him of his raiment (not only of his raiment, but all he had), and inflicted wounds, and went off, leaving him [for all they cared] half dead.

31 And according to coincidence was going down (his duties being over. Jericho was a priestly city) a certain priest that way: (Who might become defiled)

and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, being at the spot,

came and seeing him, passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to him:

e -34. His feeling. Thoughtful care.

and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion on him, (A beautiful type of the Lord. And the end is seen in John 14:3)

34 And went to him, and bound up (a medical word) his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him upon his own beast, and brought him to an inn,

and took care of him.

35 And on the next day when he departed, he took out two pence (= denari. 2 denari = half a shekel, the ransom money for a life [Ex. 30:12,13), and gave them to the host, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatsoever you spend more, in my coming back, I (emphatic) will repay you.'

36 Which therefore of these three, seems to you, to have become neighbor unto him that fell among the robbers

37 And he said, "He that shewed mercy with him." Then said Jesus to him, "Go, and do you likewise."

(Verses 38-42 peculiar to Luke)
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha

received Him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary,

which seated herself also beside the Lord's feet (Mary always misunderstood, but always found "at the Lord's feet; [1] her want of care, cp. v.42; [2] her following Martha, John 11:31; cp. v.32,33; [3] her anointing of the Lord's feet, John 12:3; cp. vv,5,7), and was listening to His word.

40 But Martha was distracted concerning much serving, and came up to Him,

        h 42-. Approbation of Mary.
         i -42. Refusal.

and said,

"Lord (notice the avoidance of the name "Jesus" by His disciples and others), is it no concern to You that my sister has left me to serve alone?

bid her therefore that she help me."

41 And Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are careful and agitated about many things:

42 But of one of [them] there is need: (not the unspiritual idea of "one dish", as there were not two or more in our days. The Lord refereed not not Martha's serving, but to her over-care.)

and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."
