John 8)

(Could be considered a parenthetical Chapter set aside)

1 But Jesus (connecting 8:1 with 7:53) went to the mount of Olives. (See James 5)

3 And the scribes and Pharisees bring to Him a woman having been taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

    F a 7. Question answered.
        b 8. The Lord. Inattention.
   E 9-. Conviction.

4 They say to Him, "Teacher, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. (she was caught in the act)

5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned (this law refers only to a "betrothed damsel" [Deut. 22:24]; and to show that the Lord knew their thoughts, and knew also that this was another man's "wife". He complied with the law prescribed in "such" a case [Num. 5:11-31], and stooped down and wrote the curses [as required in v.23] on the ground.): therefore what do You say"
6 This they said, testing Him (the temptation was in the word "such", and of two cases they mention the punishment without defining what is was; for the one in Deut. 22:23,24 [a virgin] the death was stoning; but in the case of a "wife" the punishment was not stoning, but required a special procedure [Num5:11-31] which left the punishment with God.), in order that they might have to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote into the dust of the earth, as though He heard them not. (This Figure of speech is wrongly supplied. It was not from inattention, but to call their attention to the fact that the case was "such" as required the fulfillment of Num. 5 and not Deut. 22.)

7 So when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said to them, "He that is sinless among you, let him first cast the stone at her." (i.e. the heavy stone for execution.)
8 And again He stooped down, and wrote into the dust of the earth. (The curses, as before)
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience (by the manifestation of the Lord's knowledge of what was in their minds and of what they were concealing for the purpose of testing Him), went out one by one, beginning from the elders, even as far as the last:

and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 When Jesus had lifted up Himself, and saw none except the woman, He said to her, "Woman, where are those your accusers? has no one condemned you?"
11 She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you (He does not say "your sin". He speaks judicially.): go, and sin no more."

8:12-19. SCRIBES AND PHARISEES. THEIR REBUKE.
B G1 12. Lord Declaration.
    H1 13. Pharisees. Objection.
   G2 14-18. The Lord. Refutation.
    H2 19-. Pharisees. Question.
   G3 -19. The Lord. Rebuke.

12 Therefore spoke Jesus again to them, saying, "I am the light of the world (His truth): He that follows Me shall in no way walk in darkness, but not merely see it, but posses the light of the life." (Eternal)

13 The Pharisees therefore said to Him, "You bear record concerning Yourself; Your record is not true." (Who is not telling the truth here?)

14 Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I bear record of Myself, yet My record is true: for I know from where I came, and where I go; but you know not from where I come, or where I go. (They don't have a clue)
15 You judge according to the flesh (fleshly way of the world); I judge no one.
16 And yet if (assuming the conditions) I judge, My judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent Me. (2nd witness)
17 It has been [and stands] written in law also, your own law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 I am one that bear witness of Myself, and the Father that sent Me bears witness of Me."

19 Then said they to Him, "Where is Your Father?"

Jesus answered, "You neither know Me, nor My Father: if you had known Me, you would have known My Father also." (If you had seen the Son, you would have seen the Father, Immanuel, God with us.)

20 These words spoke Jesus in the treasury (a part of the Temple, in the court of the women.), teaching in the temple: (publicly, not in secret)

and no one arrested Him; for His hour was not yet come. (Divine intervention.)

21 Then said Jesus again unto them, "I withdraw Myself, and you will seek Me, and shall die in your sin: where I go, you are not able to come." (Their sins are taking them to a different place)

22 Then said the Jews, "Surely He will not kill Himself? because He saith, 'Where I go, you cannot come.'" (They are thinking flesh not spirit)

23 And He said to them, "You are from beneath (i.e. of the earth. The Kenites are of the satan); I am out from the heavens: you are of this world; I am not of this world. (See Chapter 17)
24 I said therefore to you, that you shall die in your sins: for if you believe not that I am, you shall die in your sins."

25 Then said they to him, "Who are You?"

And Jesus said to them, "He Whom I say also to you at the beginning [of the colloquy]."
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but He that sent He is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of Him. (He could have exposed them and condemn them)

27 They did not get to know that He was speaking to them of the Father.

28 Then said Jesus to them, "When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know that I am He, and that from Myself I do nothing [nor speak]; but according as the Father taught Me, these things I speak [and do them].
29 And He that sent Me is with Me: the Father has not left Me alone; for I do the things pleasing to Him always."

30 As He spoke these things, many believed on Him.
31 Then spoke Jesus to those Jews which had believed Him (Thus distinguishing these Jews from the true believers of v.30. These were Kenites Note the emphatic word "you" in next clause), "If you abide in the word that is Mine, then you are My disciples truly; (Trusting in Him, not merely admitting His claims)
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free."

33 They answered Him, "We be Abraham's seed, and have in bondage to no one at any time: how do you say, 'You shall be made free?'" (Thus ignoring all historical facts. These were "the Jews" who believed in v. 31, and thus proved themselves not "believers indeed".)

34 Jesus answered them, "Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one who practices sin is a bond-servant of sin. (Not a single act, but a life of sin itself)
35 And the servant abides not in the house for ever: but the Son abides for ever. (Christ is going to be there)
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, you will be really free. (Spiritually)
37 I know that you are Abraham's seed; but you seek to kill me, because My word finds no entrance in you.
38 I speak that which I have seen with My Father: and you do that which you have seen with your father." (i.e. satan)

39 They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is our father".

Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. (He's checking their fruit out.)
40 But now you seek to kill Me, a Man that has told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. (Religious people wanting to murder.)
41 You are doing the works of your father." (i.e. Satan)

Then said they to Him, "We have not been begotten of fornication; we have one Father, even God."

42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me: for I proceeded forth and am here from God; not even am I come of Myself, but He sent Me.
43 Why do you not get to know My speech? even because you cannot hear My word. (Heb. idiom = understand, receive, or believe. He, Christ is the living Word.)
44 You are of your father the devil (Satan's seed - Cain, father of the Kenites), and the strong desires of your father you will to do. He was a man slayer [of the human race] from the beginning, and stood not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is the liar, and the father of it (told the first lie to Eve).
45 But because I speak the truth, you believe Me not.
46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do you not believe Me?

47. He that, &c.
e f He that is of God
    g hears Gods words:
g you therefore hear them not,
f because you are not of God.

47 He that is of God hears God's sayings: you therefore hear them not, because you are not of God.

48 Then answered the Jews (Kenites, sons of Cain. See Matt. 23:24-26), and said to Him, "Say we not well that You are a Samaritan, and has a demon?" (When Jesus told them they were of their father the devil, He made them made.)

49 Jesus answered, "I have not a demon; but I honor My Father (not making a name for Himself, not advertising), and you do dishonor Me.
50 And I seek not my own glory: there is One that seeks and judges. (There is only One that deserves glory, and He is the Judge. Of course, That One is our Father.)
51 Verily, verily, I say to you, If a man keep My word, he shall by no means see death for ever." (i.e. eternal death, because he will have part in the "resurrection unto life" as declared by the Lord in 11:25. Though your flesh may die, your soul returns to the Father from which it came [Ecc. 12:6-7]. Spiritually, a soul never dies until Father blots it out, IF you fail in the end of the millennium. See Heb. 2:14. Rev. 20:6)

52 Then said the Jews (Kenites) to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, 'If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.' (The altered the Lord's words. Not an O.T. term. They can't see past the veil, they can see only flesh. Our Father lives, and He is the God of the living. As long as you are in Him, you also live. Abraham had enough faith that he was willing to obey God and slay his son Isaac. The very son through which the seedline of Messiah had been promised.)
53 Art You greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makes You Yourself?"

54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing: it is My Father that glorifies Me; of whom you say, that He is your God: (See Deut. 15:18. Jesus had performed miracles as a witness that He was the Messiah that had been promised throughout the Old Testament. They still did not believe in Him.)
55 Yet you have not known Him; but I know Him: and if I should say, I know Him not, I shall be a liar like you: but I know Him, and keep His saying. (Work - Know it and do it. Beware, all that say that they know God don't. You must use discernment to determine who knows God and who doesn't. A person's works should tell you whether they keep God's sayings, or not. Jesus just called them liars.)
56 Your father Abraham leaped for joy in order that he might see (therefore Abraham must have heard of it from Yehovah, for "faith comes by hearing" [Rom. 10:17]) the day, Mine (i.e. the day of My promised coming. Here, Jesus allows them to call Abraham their Father as Abraham means "father of many nations", that is to say "ethnos". When Abraham's flesh body saw Messiah, his heart leaped for joy. Some would say, "When did Abraham see Messiah, He lived thousands of years before the birth of Christ." They have no idea who Melchizedek was that met Abraham in the valley of Shaveh was. See Hebrews 7:1-4): and he saw [it, by faith], and rejoiced."
57 Then said the Jews (Kenites) to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"

58 Jesus said to them, "Verily, verily (of a truth), I say to you, Before Abraham came into existence (i.e. was born), I am." (Etymology of Fathers name. Christ was there from the beginning. See Heb. 2:16-18. What did the nice religious community do then?)

59 Then took they up stones (and thus would murder the great Prophet Himself. Cp. 10:31,39 and Matt. 23:31,37. These were heavy stones. The Temple was not yet finished, and stones would be lying about.) to cast upon Him:

but Jesus hid Himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
