Part 3: Jazz knows no color

Personal Statement

“To dream anything that you want to dream, that is the beauty of the human mind. To do anything that you want to do, that is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself, to test your limits, that is the courage to succeed.”
Bernard Edmonds

In writing my personal statement I have to reflex on why I am making this journey in the first place. I would ask: what makes you tick, what makes you want to go the distance, lastly why are you doing this? Is it additional job training for a promotion, maybe a career change altogether or do you find enjoyment in just learning? My reasons for becoming an adult learner are a combination of all three questions above. The feeling of accomplishment one receives after completing a class, whether it was a computer or creative writing course; the boost to one’s self-esteem and the desire to continue learning for a life-time. What is keeping me motivated, the “want” and “thirst to learn and the desire to finish my degree.” Learning should be a life-long process with varying degrees of progression. So, as my mom would say, “shake those cob webs loose and get to learning.”

Future Goals

When I first embarked on this adventure last August I was in between jobs. I was laid off after being in a job for seventeen years. I was displaced and was not sure what direction my career should take. At that point thoughts ran through my mind I should have gone back to school years ago when I had the chance. I met with a job counselor and was informed that many adults would like to return to school but for whatever reason choose to wait or never go. For me it was timing. I do not think I was ready to go nor had the motivation to go. I was catering part-time while job hunting and decided now is the time for me to work on my Masters. I was not ready to make a total career switch but wished to utilize the skills I had into another area. I started a full-time job in my field of graphic design shortly after starting school. I work for a large financial institution, which has an excellent training facility. Choosing to stay with this company may open up an opportunity to advance into this training facility with some networking, or I may move back into the academia area where I have already spent quite a bit of my career. I chose to work on my Masters in order to open up other job opportunities and to make myself more marketable once that gate opens who knows where it may lead me.
