Birding!

My first exposure to birdwatching was in ninth grade, when my loony biology teacher, Mr. Updegrove, assigned us a winter birding project. I was afraid it would be as dull and painful as the fall leaf project. (leaves do nothing for me. absolutely nothing.) Happily, I was wrong. Our birding trips around the school on Wednesday afternoons were fun, even when Ian didn't fall in the water, and my first trip to Bombay Hook National Wildlife Reserve in Delaware hooked me for good. I went back to Bombay Hook the next year (and crashed the winter dance in muddy jeans when we arrived back at school late that evening--fun stuff), and last year was my first time participating in the Rock Run Christmas Bird Count. This fall i took a non-credit birding course at the community college with a great birder, friend, and snowball fight rival, Russ Kovach, who organizes counts for the Harford Bird Club. In short, birding is nifty. I'm not great at identification, but part of the appeal is simply learning about and spending time enjoying nature.
