#1 What interesting facts do you know about the Green Sea Turtle?

ANSWER: Green Sea Turtles travel hundreds of miles to return to the place of their birth to hatch their own eggs. Once they hatch their eggs, they instantly return to the sea. Months later when the eggs hatch, baby sea turtles instinctively know to head straight for the sea.

#2 What is being done to help these creatures?

ANSWER: In some places, nothing at all. That is why they are endangered. In other places, envionmental coalitions are petitioning the law makers to use federal funds to buy coastal lands where sea turtles breed and turn them into wildlife preserves. Since pollution and oil spills dirty our oceans and therefore endanger the wildlife, certain countries are trying to pass laws that would make companies/people pay fines for polluting the ocean.

#3 Is the St. Louis zoo participating in anything to help the sea turtle, or are you planning on someday owning one?

ANSWER: The St. Louis Zoo is not set up to be an aquarium. They do, however, have educational programs that teach awareness of endangered animals. There are many aquariums across the country such as the Shed Aquarium in Chicago, Sea World in Orlando and California, to name just a few, that teach awareness of endangered ocean animals and also breed many of these endangered animals in their aquariums. Once a population is established, many times they release these animals back into the wild.
