The God Who Calms Our Fears

In the midst of our fear-filled world, we can find comfort in our revealed God. Our fears recede as we come to know Him better and view our circumstances in light of His promises and plans. Below are just a few of the names of God. Each of them highlights a facet of God that can shine light into every anxiety and worry.


  1. El Elyoh: God Most High

    1. Meditate on     Psalm 47.

      1. Ps 47:1, sing Shout to the Lord!
      2. Ps 47:4, read     Inheritance

    2. In Gen. 14:17-20, Abraham met Melchizedek, the King of Salem. How else is Melchizedek identified (v18)?

    3. This is the first time God is idtentified as Elyon, meaning "highest, uppermost, most high". The ancient world was filled with gods, as is our world. What does the name El Elyon tell you about the God of the Bible?

    4. How is God higher than the things you fear?

      Calm the Storm

      1. Meditate on     Psalm 16.

      3. Read Jesus Calms the Storm     Mark 4:35-41

      4. Read     Peace! Be still!

    Psalms 7:17     I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

    Psalms 9:2     I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

    Psalms 21:7     For the king trusts in the LORD ; through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken.

    Psalms 46:4     There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.

    Psalms 47:2     How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King over all the earth!

    Psalms 83:18     Let them know that you, whose name is the LORD - that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.

    Psalms 91:9-10     If you make the Most High your dwelling- even the LORD , who is my refuge- then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.

    Psalms 97:9     For you, O LORD , are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.

  2. El Shaddai: God Almighty

    1. Meditate on     Psalm 91.

    2. Throughout Abraham's life, God gradually revealed more of Himself. In Gen. 17:1-3, what did God say about Himself?

    3. What does almighty mean?

    4. Read     Psalm 91:1-2. What do you learn here about the person who dwells "in the shelter of the Most High"?

    5. When you are afraid, in what "shadow" besides God's might you be tempted to rest? How could resting in the shadow of God's might and power affect your fear?

    7. Read     Alpha, Omega -- the Almighty

    Psalms 24:9-10     Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty- he is the King of glory.

    Psalm 46:7     The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

    Psalm 48:8     As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD Almighty, in the city of our God: God makes her secure forever.

    Psalm 80:7     Restore us, O God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

    Psalm 84:1     How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty!

    Psalm 91:1-2     He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
    I will say of the LORD , "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

  3. El Roi: The God Who Sees Me

    1. Meditate on     Psalm 33.

    2. In Gen 16:1-6 another facet of God is revealed. Why might Hagar have felt invisible?

    3. After Hagar's encounter with God in Gen 16:7-14, what impressed her most about God?

    4. Has it ever seemed that no one really noticed the fearful thing you were enduring, including God? If so, describe how it felt.

    5. How would knowing that God really did see you have changed the experience you described?

  4. Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord Will Provide

    1. In His time, God provided a son to Abraham and Sarah. However, God also used this son to test Abraham's faithfulness. Read     Gen 22:1-8. What confidence did Abraham have (v8)?

    2. Read     Gen 22:9-14.    How did God respond to that confidence?

    3. What did Abraham name the place?

    4. Think back through your own history with God. If you have a "place" that you have named "God Provides", describe it.

    5. What does     Mt 6:25-34 say about God's promise to provide?

    6. Are you sometimes fearful that God will not provide for your needs? Which of your needs are hardest to entrust to God?

    7. What are God's promises regarding those needs according to     Phil 4:19 and     2 Cor 9:8-11 ?

    9. Meditate on     Psalm 146.

  5. Jehovah-Shalom: God Is Our Peace

    1. In Judges, Abraham's descendants grappled with fear as the Midiantes oppressed them by ravaging their country and raiding their crops. When the Israelites cried out for help, God responded. Read     Judges 6:11-24. God's solution was to send a peace loving farmer to battle. What assurance did God give Gideon (v16)?

    2. The angel of the Lord appeared before Gideon and told him to deliver his people from oppression. And yet, what did Gideon name the altar he built (v24)?

    3. Perhaps you are facing a seemingly impossible circumstance or challenge. Why might an "altar" named "God Is Our Peace" be essential in your life?

    4. What might you need to sacrifice on that altar?

    5. In     Isa 9:6, Jesus is called the Prince of Peace. Why can we find peace through Jesus (    John 16:33)?

    6. How does this knowledge change the way you view your own peace threatening circumstance?

    7. Read     Numbers 6:26     The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

  6. Immanuel: God With Us
    1. Throughout the Old Testament, God gave His people assurance. In the New Testament, we see even more intimate encounters. In Matt. 1:22-23, what prophesied name for the Messiah is made real?

    2. How was Jesus Immanuel to people living in first-century Israel?

    3. Read John 14:15-31. In what way is God still with us? How can we encourage God to be with us?

  7. God Of All Comfort
    1. In 2 Cor. 1:3-11, Paul revealed yet another facet of God's character. What does he call God?

    2. When sick or hurt as a child, what did you find most comforting?

    3. What is the relationship between comfort we receive from God and our ability to comfort others?

    4. Read Ro. 8:35-39. What frightening situations are listed here?

    5. What comfort of God is present in your fearful circumstances?

  8. Jehovah-Rapha: The God Who Heals

    1. In     Exodus 15:22-27, after God intervened and gave the Israelites water in the desert, He revealed Himself as Jehovah-Rapha, saying "I am the Lord, who heals you." According to     Luke 4:18-19, what are some of the conditions that God heals?

    2. Read     Rev 21:1-5. What is the ultimate end of all that we fear?

    3. How have you seen glimpses of this healing in the present?

    4. Does God's word heal?
      Read     Matt 8:5-13 - The Faith of the Centurion

      Proverbs 4:20-22     My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.

      Psalm 107:20     He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.

    5. You have now seen three scriptures clearly saying God's Word heals. Is that Word still available today?

      Mark 13:31     "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away."

      Isaiah 40:8     "The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever."

      1 Peter 1:23     having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,

      Hebrews 13:8     Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

    6. In light of this study, what is the added significance of -
      Exodus 15:26     "... For I am the Lord who heals you." ?

      God chose to first reveal Himself by this Name to His chosen people Israel after He delivered them from bondage. He told them He was a Healer.

      It is God's nature to heal. For Him it is natural; just as it is natural for you to breathe. To stop being the "Lord Who Heals" would be to stop being Himself.

    Though we aren't guaranteed that we will never encounter fear-inducing circumstances, through the power, provision, peace and presence of God we can experience freedom from slavery to fear.
