For Better?

I tell you good morning
and I’m soon made aware
of your unspoken question:
“What’s so good about it?”

Every day I have to prove to you
that life is worth smiling about,
that it is okay to feel
something other than anger.
And if I fail…..
I punish myself
by joining in your misery.

Why can’t you just wake up happy about life,
content until something proves you wrong…
but not searching so desperately for something to prove you wrong?

Why can’t you just be grateful
for the sun or the rain
or the fact that you have shelter
and a wife who loves you
despite all of your flaws?
Why can’t you just trust
that God loves you
and he will provide what you need,
regardless of what it is?

And why can’t I
just leave you alone in your misery,
rather than insisting
that you have a companion?
