He then started college, and played for two years with the Ramblers, a dance band, but gave up playing to concentrate on his eduation and family. (Two daughters, one son, and now seven grandchildren.) He earned a B.A. in English and philosophy at the University of Tulsa, was awarded a National Defense Fellowship for his Masters at OU, and after a couple of years in the business world returned to school. Chuck taught at colleges and universities in Texas, Wyoming, Minnesota, and Oklahoma, taking further graduate work as time permitted (some of it at the University of Texas, Austin, while teaching at Southwestern University in Georgetown), and received the Ph.D. in English and American Studies in l974 from the University of Tulsa. Over a thirty-two-year career he was honored with a number of Outstanding Professor awards. In l981 he took up the horn again after a twenty-three-year hiatus, and played with college and community bands and orchestras until his retirement. Chuck retired in l995 from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK, and moved with his artist wife, Joanne, to Marble Falls to be nearer his brother and sister-in- law in Austin. (Joanne designed and painted the stands for the Flashbacks and the Skylarks, and is represented in four galleries in Spicewood and Austin.)
