The Symbol of Snake in Medicine

 

A stick, a snake, a cock or a bowl are found near the Aesculapius’ statues. If we examine the statues, the stick which he was supported is the sign of long life, and the snake shows attention and intelligence.

 

In Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt each city had a God, and these Gods were represented by an animal. For example, the symbol of Tebh in ancient Egypt was a snake. Also, on the gate of Asclpieian ( Aesculapius’ hospital ) had snake as the symbol of medical science.

 

The symbols of double snakes were also carved on the stones at the gates of Seljukian hospitals through out Anatolian cities. So, the snake has become the symbol of medicine since ancient ages.
