The ongoing construction projects at Monte Vista will require a lot of patience and cooperation from students.
The constructions have been severely needed throughout the MV campus for a very long time, according to Bob Stewart. Now, thanks to parents’ recent commitment to pay higher taxes, funds are being invested in the improvement of MV school facilities.
The District’s Director of Facilities, Marianne Miller, plans completion of the re-roofing phase by early February, weather permitting.
This first phase includes replacing several covered walkways as well as the roofs of many buildings on campus.
Refurbishments will begin at the west end of campus between the locker rooms and the commons, as the old covered walkway roofs are exchanged with new ones.
The walkway roofs between the commons and the library will be replaced next, then between the administration and the home economics buildings, and finally the walkway roofs will be rebuilt between the library and social science buildings.
Also during this time, the air conditioning and heating systems for the theater and commons building will be improved.
The initial repair work will cost an estimated $18.5 million, as part of a 20 year bond authorized by the San Ramon community in the April 14 public vote.
This roofing phase of the construction is only the first of many projects to come. A new gym, music building and additional classrooms are scheduled to be built in the near future. A multi-storeyed building in place of the present science building is also planned.
The addition of a Monte Vista pool is presently being considered, though it is not yet part of the confirmed plans. First, the plans must be approved by the State Department of Architecture (SDA), which could mean a 6-month waiting period.
The company in charge of the renovations is West Coast Construction. Daily life on campus will not be interrupted. Buildings under construction will be temporarily replaced with portable classrooms, and detours will be marked for walkway sections that have been closed off.
“Construction sites pose a potential hazard,” said Bob Stewart. “Students should keep away for their own safety.”
The administration office welcomes visitors to look over the plans and drawings of what MV will look like following the completion of these projects.
