Whar is "All One Sound"?

"All One Sound" is a weekly public radio program designed to show the listener the common ground shared between Jazz and World music. AOS does this by showcasing both musical styles in the same show.

Exactly how are Jazz and World music connected?

Jazz music of course, owes much of its origins to the musical traditions of Africa, particularly the "Call and Response" style of performance in much of that continents folk traditions. But in addition, Jazz does have some contributions from European Classical music, and in its evolutionary history, it has embraced musical elements from such places as Cuba, Brazil, and other far flung corners of the Earth. So in that regard, Jazz is in a sense a "world" music in its own right.
The term World music, in recent times, has come to refer to an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary music from many diverse cultures and nations of the world. It also refers to the blending or "fusion" of two or more distinct musical styles or cultures, (such as West African music and Celtic music).
Thus, because of both their similarities AND their difference, Jazz and World music can be traced to common origins.

How can I hear All One Sound?

The program is broadcast Tuesday evenings from 8-10 p.m. Eastern Time (Wednesdays from 00:00-02:00 GMT), on WEOS in Geneva, New York. WEOS covers much of the Figner Lakes region at 89.7 FM. In the greater Geneva area, we are best heard at 90.3 FM, and in Ithaca, you can tune in at 88.1 on the dial. For our listeners outside the area, you can listen online. Just go to the WEOS website, www.weos.org, and once there, click on the Live Broadcast link for instructions on tuning in.

I tuned in at the listed time, but did not hear the program. Why wasn't tt aired?

WEOS is a station operated by both students of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and community volunteers. In fairness to the student DJs, some community programming must at times be either re-scheduled, or even temporarily suspended, as student shows have priority on the station at the moment. There is no guarantee at this time that we will be able to retain our current slot on WEOS, however, all efforts will be made to keep the program on the air at some time during the week. If you don't hear us, check the website, as the latest schedule changes will always be posted here. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

How do I track down the music I hear n AOS?

Tracking down this music is not always easy, but it can be done with some patience and effort on the part of the person searching for it. Sadly, many chain record stores won't have a clue if you approach them about most Jazz or World music recordings. That said, your best option is to search online. Many online music stores such as amazon.com or cdnow.com offer a wide selection of titles in all genres of music. If you're looking for the best prices however, then you might want to order direct from the record label itself. Many labels, large and small, have their own website. Links to many of these sites can be found at Record Labels On The Web, (we have a link to their homepage on our homepage). The label on which every song is released in displayed in brackets ( ) at the end of each song entry in our playlists.

Do you take requests?

We're always interested in what our listeners want to hear. You are always welcome to place requests for Jazz or World music on the program. But please be aware that these shows are generally planned out in advance of the date they are broadcast. So if you don't hear your song right away, keep listening, if we have it, we play it!

What is the difference between All One Sound and Finger Lakes Music Showcase?

AOS is actually a companion program to FLMS. The primary difference is that AOS draws its content from the Jazz and World music libraries of WEOS itself, whereas FLMS features a more diverse array of music, and draws its content from the personal collection of Jake Longwell. Both shows are produced and hosted by Jake, who is dedicated to promoting musical diversity in our region.
