And, don't forget the alumni will start to gather on campus (starting at 12:00) under two tents in the parking lot adjacent to the football stadium at noon for food and drinks prior to the big game. We hope to see all of you there, Steve Dolan More on Canto: Official Story Posted on Sat, Oct. 18, 2003 McGreevey asks agency to justify security hire. It is a response to Republican lawmakers' contention that Thomas Canto was not qualified for the A.C. airport position. By Jennifer Moroz Inquirer Staff Writer Responding to accusations of political patronage, Gov. McGreevey has asked a South Jersey transportation agency under his control to justify the selection of a former YMCA director to oversee security at Atlantic City International Airport. The request comes just days after it was reported that the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which owns the airport and manages the Atlantic City Expressway, hired Thomas J. Canto to fill the $60,000-a-year position of security coordinator at the airport. The position was unadvertised, and Atlantic County Republicans assailed the selection of a man they said was unqualified for the job as another example of patronage at the Democrat-controlled agency. Some have quietly questioned whether Canto is a relative of a state union leader of the same name. That Thomas Canto works alongside transportation authority chairman Frank Spencer, a prominent Camden County Democrat, at the New Jersey Regional Council of Carpenters. A spokeswoman for McGreevey said she was unaware of any relation, and others interviewed yesterday could not confirm one. But the governor, she said, had asked the agency "to look into" the hiring. "We have asked [transportation authority executive director] Jim Crawford not for a formal review, but to get back to us on the qualifications for the job," McGreevey spokeswoman Kathy Ellis said. Spencer did not return calls for comment, nor did Canto, who started has already started in his new position. Crawford, a Republican holdover allowed to keep his position by the McGreevey administration, yesterday said the situation had been overblown. He also said the job did not have to be advertised. And he ultimately was the one to choose Canto from a short list of candidates for a job he said was largely administrative - not police work. "It's essentially being responsible for doing a lot of coordination and administration... the job seemed to fit the person we were putting in there," Crawford said. According to his resume, Canto, 33, of West Windsor, has a bachelor's degree inphysical education from Trenton State College and a master of science in education and business administration from Temple University. He was associate director at the Abington YMCA from 2001 until last year, and before that, director of membership at the Princeton Family YMCA and assistant director of Parks and Recreation for West Windsor Township. "I've never seen anything like it in my life," said Assemblyman Francis Blee (R., Atlantic). "You have retired state police, retired law enforcement interested in the position,... and we end up with someone who was director of a YMCA." Authority Commissioner Stanley "Jake" Glassey said he did not know anything about the hiring until after the fact. "The authority never worked this way before," said Glassey, who has been on the board since its inception. The accusations of patronage are not new. In June, the authority hired former Camden County Parks Director Bart Mueller, a close friend of Spencer's, to oversee the E-ZPass toll collection system on the expressway. McGreevey's request to review the most recent hiring had some Republicans scratching their heads. "We could review the qualifications of many of the recent hirings," said Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson. "It should end with Mr. Canto, not begin with Mr. Canto." |

Alumnus in the News: Official Story here. HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. - The executive director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority acknowledged yesterday that he knew the man he had hired as security coordinator for Atlantic City International Airport had ties to authority chairman Frank Spencer. But Jim Crawford said he did not know until yesterday that Thomas Canto Jr. was the son of union leader Thomas Canto, Spencer's colleague at the New Jersey Regional Council of Carpenters. Spencer, a prominent Camden County Democrat who serves as the authority's chairman at the behest of Gov. McGreevey, heads the union. First reported last week in the Press of Atlantic City, Canto's hiring prompted a backlash from Atlantic County Republicans. They called the agency, which owns the airport and manages the Atlantic City Expressway, a patronage pit for the Democrats who control it. The GOP contended that Canto, 33, a former YMCA administrator from Mercer County who has a bachelor's degree in physical education and a master's degree in business administration, was unqualified to fill a security job at an airport that serves roughly one million passengers a year. During yesterday's regular authority board meeting, a member of the public questioned the hire, and Spencer said the authority "had made a mistake in the title of the job. It's really not a security job. It's a management position." He declined to elaborate after the meeting. Canto, already on the job, did not return a call for comment. But Crawford said yesterday that Canto was qualified to fill the $60,000-a-year position, which he, too, maintained was largely administrative. In an interview, Crawford said the three or four resumes that had landed on his desk for the unadvertised position had been from people recommended by the authority's commissioners. Crawford, who can single-handedly hire or fire anyone below the department head level, chose Spencer's pick, he said, "because he's the chairman. I'm not dumb... . If the chairman doesn't have a horse in the race, it's a different story." He said Canto's hiring was "not inconsistent" with regular hiring practices at the authority. The chairman's picks get precedence "given they have the qualifications and, once they're in the position, they perform adequately." Crawford said he "expressly" did not want someone with a law enforcement background for the position. He said the airport, which is in Egg Harbor Township, is monitored by township police and state police. Those two departments have had difficult relations, Crawford said, and he did not want to complicate matters with another law enforcement presence. The coordinator's job, he said, was mostly keeping up with Transportation Security Administration rules, and reporting to the federal government on airport security measures. |

Alumnus is Aspiring Entertainer:
Our own Glenn Fuchs, a long time fan and performer of hip hop, has produced his first official CD release. Under the stage name Kid Kosher and a 3 original song CD called Hip Hop Hanukkah, Glenn is becoming a new up and coming hip hop sensation. Glenn first publicly performed his original song "Light the Menorah" in July at NJ 101.5's Big Joe Jersey Talent Show in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. Along with a standing ovation from the large crowd, Glenn was invited to perform his songs at the radio station's Holiday Extravaganza live on the air in December at Jenkinson's in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ with the NJ group of musicians called Holiday Express. Although not many CDs have been sold yet due to the independent release limitations, exposure and performances are sure to help catapult this alumnus to semi-stardom. You can get more information about Kid Kosher and hear samples of his songs at the Kid Kosher website. |
