Two quotes from Patrick J. McStravick (Mackey Sasser) for the website:

How about the team [current TCNJ Men's XC]? Man they are getting pretty friggin' good.

Congrats on the web-site, you and Fuchsy are doing an incredible job with it. It's one of the best web-sites I've ever seen. It's got so much stuff on it.

Why do they run so well in Wisconsin?

Here's why Wisconsin Div. III schools are so good:

a) The average Wisconsin Div. III school has over 10,000 undergraduates, some with over 12,000 and 15,000.

b) They have bigtime Health & Phys. Ed. Departments.

c) Their athletic programs are extremely well-funded. Some of their track programs have two or three full-timers plus three to five graduate assistant coaches. Most Division I programs have less coaches.

d) Most have indoor tracks, or indoor tracks close to their campuses.

e) It's a very competitive conference for XC and track.

f) Both schools have good budgets and enough coaches.

g) There are a lot less, and I mean a lot less, colleges up there, especially Div. I schools. If you're a good runner in Jersey, you have chances to run on scholarship for not only the Div. I schools in Jersey, but the bunches of Div. I and Div. II schools in Pennsylvania, NY, etc. Schools like Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, St. Joe's, LaSalle, Army, etc. steal a lot of good Jersey runners. There is a lot less competition there than here.

Imagine TCNJ XC and track teams if we had 10,000 kids on campus, an indoor track, and four more coaches.

Here are results from last years nationals and regionals to compare to this year:

Health Information:
What's At Stake!
Urge Congress to support healthy eating and physical activity! Two-thirds of premature deaths in the U.S. are due to poor nutrition, physical inactivity and tobacco use. Federal and state governments conduct effective programs to reduce tobacco use, but do little to promote healthy eating and physical activity and reduce obesity. Diet and inactivity are cross-cutting risk factors, contributing significantly to four out of the six leading causes of death (heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes). Obesity is the nation’s fastest rising public health problem. Obesity rates among U.S. adults increased by 60% between 1991 and 2000 and rates doubled in children over the last 20 years. Overweight and obesity affect the majority of American adults (61%). The negative health consequences of rising obesity rates are already evident. Rates of diabetes (most of which is type 2, which is largely due to obesity, poor diet and inactivity) rose 50% between 1990 and 2000. Type 2 diabetes can no longer be called "adult onset" diabetes because of rising rates in children. All states should be funded by the CDC as soon as possible to promote healthy eating and physical activity and reduce obesity. Currently, only twelve states are funded.

Message from Metzie:

Teammates,

It's all over. It was an incredible experience. We were doing great until mile 20. At that point my training partner felt like he couldn't move his legs so we drastically slowed down. We actually walked some from miles 20-24. I felt great until we slowed down drastically. We were on pace to finish in 3:12 through 18 miles, and ended up running 3:45.54.

First nine miles 66:38, Second nine miles 65:22, Last 8.2 miles 92:44. Despite the struggle for my friend the last 8 miles the whole experience was awesome! Attached are some pictures from our support crew. We had 14 friends and family members cheering us on. Please take a look at a really nice sign my sister made. It was very special.

Thanks to everyone for you donations and support. I will email everyone when the final numbers are in. Probably in a month or so.

Tom

Recap of Last Month's Highlights:

Sports Hall of Fame Dinner:
Coach McCorkle's dinner and induction was fantastic! Approximately a dozen or more cross country and track alumni from many different years came to show support for Coach. Members from the programs first year (who's names I can't remember, please email me and I'll post them) came out to show Coach they hadn't forgotten about him. Coach was absolutely thrilled to see so many of us there. Coach's acceptance speech was very humble and individually thanked each of us that came to the dinner. I don't think Coach could have been more proud to see so many of his previous runners from over the years. Dan Magee gave a very eloquent introduction speech highlighting the caring gentleman we all enjoyed calling "Coach" throughout our years at TSC/TCNJ.

We met so many older alumni Friday that we can't remember everyone's name, please email us so we can list you here. Partial list of those alumni in attendance:
Dan Magee
Glenn Fuchs
Brendan Jacobs
Mark Mirabelli
Patsy Marino
Dean Shonts
Jim Webb

Jim Webb was at Coach McCorkle's Induction dinner the other night and gave us some old photos to post. Check them out here.

Message from Coach Rick McCorkle:

Glenn,
Thanks so much for yours and Tara's "best wishes." Dan suggested I contact you in regard to posting a message on the Alumni website. I have received so many messages of "best wishes" and other very complementary messages from Alumni. It would be very time consuming to contact each of them individually. Suffice to say, I am very honored and humbled by their response, and want to thank each and every one of them for their kind words. It was indeed a pleasure to work with so many fine individuals over the years, and even more gratifying to see what successes each has had with career, community, and family. This response has made my coaching and teaching years so worthwhile.

Thanks so much, Rick McCorkle

Message from Metzie:
Thank you to everyone who sent in money for the race. So far we have raised over $2,500 and it seems like people are still sending in money. Hopefully someday in the future I can send you an email thanking you for helping find a cure because of this money being raised.

I am ready for the marathon. If you would like to see how I do you can go to:

http://www.nyrrc.org/nyrrc/marathon/results/index.html

during the race and it will tell you my times for my half marathon, 20k and the finish. You can type in my name
or even easier my number which is 5510. Thanks again for your support.

Tom Metz

Alumnus Article:
Leukemia not a hurdle for this runner
By Rob Jennings, Daily Record

ROCKAWAY - A 36-year-old borough man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia will be one of more than 30,000 runners at Sunday's 33rd annual New York City Marathon. Tom Metz, who remains at an early stage of the disease, is using his 26.2-mile effort as a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Through noon on Monday, Metz had raised $2,039 - "and 79 cents," he added lightly. It will be Metz's second marathon. His first, also in New York City, was in 1992.

The one-time track star at Trenton State College (now known as The College of New Jersey) initially signed up to support his friend, John Hanlon of Hackettstown, who will run his first marathon Sunday. Then Metz was placed in contact with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's chapter in Springfield, which organizes participation in numerous races, including Monday's Dublin Marathon in Ireland, as a means of raising money.

In addition to his running number, Metz will wear the nicknames of two close friends - "Wrobo" and "Pig" - on his running jersey.

Joe Wroblewski, who died of leukemia complications in 1998 at age 36, was Metz's college teammate.

Michael Pignatello, 34, who lives in Lafayette, is in remission from leukemia, Metz said. Pignatello said Monday that he appreciated Metz's acknowledgment of his struggle.

Metz was diagnosed in 1999 with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a malignancy of the white blood cells known as lymphocytes. The disease is so rare in young people that doctors initially attributed Metz's test results to a lab mistake. When Metz first received the news, he was unsure whether he'd ever run again. However, because he remains at an early stage of the disease, he's been able to remain active, despite battling occasional fatigue, joint pain and swollen lymph nodes.

Less than a year after being diagnosed, Metz won a 1,500-meter race in the 30- to 34-year-old group at the USA Track & Field championships in Oregon, finishing in 4:26. Last March, Metz and three friends set a U.S. indoor record at a 4 x 800-meter relay race in New York City in 8:44.

Metz's wife, Kathleen, will watch him run Sunday, using the New York City subways to catch him at different places on the course.

Alumni Spotlight:
Dan Magee

Former XC Team Captain
Former Back Seat Boy

The name Dan Magee is well known from older alumni from the XC/Track Program inception under Coach Rick McCorkle all the way through the current program under Coach Steve Dolan. Dan is an icon to the program and always kept a strong sense of team and alumni team members in the forefront of his college activities. A born leader, Dan continues to this day to take an active role in gathering and showing strong alumni support for the XC/Track Program at TCNJ.

Dan also was the driving force behind this Alumni web site as he longed for a way to keep our alumni in touch and informed of news related to our alma mater's XC/Track Program.

Dan currently resides in Atlanta Georgia where he works as the Coordinator of Recreational Services at Emory University. Dan is currently engaged to Kirsten Atchley of Decatur, Georgia. A spring 2003 wedding is being planned. Let's tip our hats to this outstanding alumnus, and yes, these are the last known photos of Dan in action during college.
