Alumnus once coached current Olympian:

Our own Dan Magee coached Ewing High School's Dudley Dorival, who is running for Haiti in the Athens Summer Olympics currently going on. Read the whole story here.

Message from Jim Casey:

Below are my results from the San Diego Half Marathon yesterday. Approached it as a training run and an assessment of my fitness for the Chicago Marathon in October. First few miles were downhill and I held back with opening miles of 6:19 and 6:13. Was keeping my heart rate level where I have been for my marathon pace long runs and the miles just started to average at about 5:55 (heart rate of 171 to 177 bpm). On Coach Duley's advice I held back as much as possible until after mile 8 and if I felt good, would start to let it roll at that point (which I did). Mile 12 is brutally uphill and even though it was a 6:21 for me, I took about 5 or 7 runners and came back with a 5:45 for the last 1.1 miles and took down another 5 runners (max heart rate at 202 bpm at finish).

May have been able to average 5:50 miles if I approached this as a "real" race (which would have given me a shot at the 3rd guy in my division who ran a 1:14:20) but the goal was to not lose 2 weeks of training by overdoing it. Time will tell if I did that or not because the competitive juices were really flowing and revved me up in the last 4 miles. Good confidence boost for Chicago but hopefully not so much that I stray from my goal marathon pace of 6:10. It will be quite interesting if I can continue my consistent training for another month.

Message from Metzie:

To all my teammates it was blood test time again and I had a real good test. I was surprised because August is usually my highest blood test. Also I had a viral infection in July which could raise my count as well as a bone spur in my right anklewhich kept me from running for a full seven weeks.

My white count went down to 24.2 which is the lowest it has been since my December 99 diagnosis. Also my lymphocyte count is down to 19.1 which is also the lowest it has been since diagnosis. Again normal is 3.3-10.5 for Whitecount and 1.2-3 for Lymphocyte count. My red blood cell count remains strong at 5.32(normal 4.35-5.9) and my platelets remain in the normal range 168(144-400), but I would like to see that count go up. She also only found some small swollen lymph nodes in the back of my neck and front of my neck, but none in my chest or armpit area.Very good news. Thanks again to everyone for their support. One interesting thing is I began to take green tea caplets since my last blood test. There was a study that said grean tea can cure CLL. I don't know about that, but my count is the lowest it has been in 5 years so it will be interesting to see if it continues to go down for my next test in December. Especially if I can run more miles and stay away from catching a cold or infection.

My sincere appreciation,
Metzie

Message from Kevin McHugh, Athletic Director TCNJ:

Hello Dan,

Good to hear from you. Yes, Steve will be missed but I think most people understand why the Princeton situation was one that he could not pass up. I too hope (actually expect) that the new coach (or coaches) that we hire will keep the program "momentum" going in terms of the student-athletes who participate, the academic success they achieve, the competitive excellence that they have demonstrated, and yes, the alumni involvement that has been generated thus far. To do the latter, we will continue to look to grads such as yourself who have remained steadfast supporters and so it is great to hear that you are thinking along this line as well. As you observed, Homecoming is a terrific opportunity to involve alums and again, I expect that the new coach(es) will continue the efforts that Steve has begun and I am sure that your experience in this area will be of great help. Thanks again for getting in touch and you can be sure that once we have the new leadership on board, your assistance will be sought.

Have a great summer,
Kevin

Message from Pat McStravick:

Something crazy that I am involved in for Sept. 2005 that I thought you might like to share with the Alumni: http://www.rtbrelay.com/index.shtml It's a 200 Mile relay race in New Hampshire. I'm going to run it with some friends of a co-worker of mine . . . 12 guys each run three legs of 3-8 miles, then finish with a party on the beach. It takes 20-35 hours to finish.

Over the next year, we are going to run some 3-10K races just to make sure that everyone is at least running and reasonably committed. I have even started running (sort of, very slowly) myself. Our first race is September 19, 2004, a Sunday 5K in Philadelphia: http://www.philadistancerun.org/

The Birds play Monday night so no conflict there (which frankly is important to me from a motivational standpoint).

Stay free,
PJMc
