Lion Invitational Alumni Mile: I went to the meet this past Saturday in the drizzle. I came to run the alumni mile and wasn't going to let the rain stop me. There were only about 8 of us in the race. I can't recall all the names, but I do recall Karen Petouvis and a guy named Chris being there. I was the only Old School runner there (by Old School I mean anyone who ran under Coach McCorkle) and the oldest by about 5/6 years. Halfway through the first turn at the start of the race I immediately saw how the race was gonna go and thought to myself "see you guys at the finish..." as the pack sprinted away from me. I continued to speed along at my own pace for the entire race getting passed in the first turn of the third lap by All American Karen Petouvis, who earlier ran in the 5K. Only the winner managed to lap me at the very end of his race. I ended up finishing 100+ meters behind Karen with a time of 6:30. Not a bad time considering I haven't raced in 10 years, I'm 30 lbs. heavier, and only run approximately twice a week for a maximum distance of 2.5 miles. It felt great to run on my alma mater's track once again wearing the school logo from my days as an undergraduate (TSC). A spectator that cheered me on in the final turn of my race remarked to me as being Old School because of my shirt and made me feel a sense of pride for being there and competing once again for fun. Glenn Fuchs Alumnus expecting first child: Believe it or not, our own Glenn Fuchs is going to be a father! Little Fuchsy is due to arrive in early November wearing running sneakers and a racing singlet. Mazel tov to Glenn and Tara! |
