Well, I will not be an enemy of anything.
I'll only stand here
Waiting for you.
All my sins...
I said that I would pay for them if I could come back to you.
All my innocence is wasted on the dead and the dreaming.
After a few more dates with Brian, Ruby decided he was safe enough to keep going out
with him. One night after dinner, they were back in Brian’s dorm.
“Yeah,” he grunted shoving himself into her. “Give it to me bitch.”
Ruby raised her eyebrows as she laid beneath him. She looked over to the side
and closed her eyes.
“Oh man,” he said rolling off of her after he came. “You’re great.”
“That’s it?” She thought. “Um, Brian,” she said turning on her side.
“Mm hmm,” he rested his hands behind his head.
“You called me a bitch.”
Brian turned his head to look at her. “I did?”
She nodded.
“Oh, well I didn’t mean it, baby. You just make me crazy, I can’t help it,” he
smiled.
“Well try,” she said patting his bare stomach. She rolled over on her other side
and closed her eyes.
“Um, babe? Are you sleeping here?” He asked.
Ruby opened her eyes. “I was planning on it,” she told him.
“Well I have to get up real early tomorrow,” he said. “And my roommate’s
coming home soon.”
“Oh. Okay, I’ll go home,” she said throwing the covers off herself. She bent
down and picked up her shirt. She stood up and slid her jeans on and found her shoes.
“I’ll talk to you later, okay?” Brain said sitting up.
“Yeah, sure. Goodnight,” she said.
“Come here,” he said holding his arms out. She gave him a hug and he kissed her
cheek. “Goodnight.”
She took her purse and left his room. “Give it to me bitch?” She said to herself
walking down the hall. “What the hell?”

Zac sat outside the coffee shop his friends hung out at and played guitar with Will.
They finished “Nowhere Man” by the Beatles and drew a small crowd of friends.
“Zac are you coming to Ansley’s party tonight?” Meghan asked coming over to
him.
“I don’t know,” he shrugged. “Maybe.”
“I think you should. Ansley really wants you to come,” she said raising her
eyebrows.
“Why does she really want me to come?” Zac asked tuning his guitar.
“Just come. She really likes you,” Meghan said sitting up on the waist-high
concrete wall with him.
“Oh now she likes me? After Taylor told her he didn’t want to go out with her.”
“Hey, she liked both of you guys,” she said.
“Well then it’s okay,” Zac said sarcastically.

After another week or so of mediocre sex and dates with Brian, Ruby was over at
his dorm eating pizza with him and watching a movie.
“I have a present for you,” Brian said standing up.
“Really?” Ruby asked sitting back on his bed.
“Well it’s no big deal,” he smiled handing her a wrapped rectangular box.
“Wow, I’m impressed,” she said carefully tearing open the silver wrapping paper.
She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion when she saw the cover of the video. “Buns of
Steel?” She asked looking up at him.
“Well, you know how you’re always complaining about your bubble butt-” he said.
“Whoa, whoa,” she interrupted standing up. “Are you trying to tell me I have a
big ass?”
“No, Ruby. I’m just saying that you complain about it a lot so..I’m listening to
you. See? It looks like fun.”
“Oh my God,” she said angrily. “Are you retarded?”
“I don’t think you have a big ass. I’m just saying-”
“You’re just saying that I should do butt clenches,” she read the back of the box,
“5 days a week for only thirty minutes a day. And I’ll be okay?”
“I’m sorry if you took this the wrong way. I just thought this was what you
wanted,” Brian defended.
“Well keep your Buns of Steel for yourself,” she dropped it on the floor at his feet.
“Cause you won’t be getting any of mine.” She picked up her purse and left slaming the
door behind her.

She walked the few blocks back to her building and stormed inside. In the elevator
she started laughing to herself wondering how any guy could be so stupid. She got to her
room and dropped her purse on her desk chair and flopped down on her bed. She took
the phone and dialed the new number that Zac had given her once he and Taylor got their
own phone line.
“Hello?” Zac answered.
“Zac?”
“...Hey Ruby,” he answered only needing one word to recognize her voice.
“Hi. Are you busy?” She asked.
“No, not at all. I’m just sitting around. What about you?”
“Do I have a big ass?”
“No,” he laughed. “Why would you think that?”
“Well you know that guy I told you about, Brian?”
“Yeah,” he said pulling at the velcro pocket of his cargo shorts.
“Okay well, he gave me a workout video today so I could work on my bubble
butt,” she explained.
“What?” He exclaimed. “Are you serious?”
“Yes,” she laughed. “He gave me Buns of Steel. I kid you not.”
“That’s ridiculous. No, you don’t have a big ass. Your ass is perfect... along with
the rest of your body,” he assured her.
“Well thank you,” she smiled. “He won’t be getting near my ass anytime soon.”
Zac smiled to himself at the sound of her voice and let out a deep breath. “I miss
you.”
“I miss you too,” she told him. “I wish you were here.”
Zac was suprised. “God, so do I.”
“What are you wearing?” She asked.
Zac laughed. “What if I said nothing?” He grinned.
“Then I’d say I didn’t believe you,” she laughed.
“Yeah, you’re right. I’m wearing khaki shorts and a t-shirt,” he told her.
“Ooh, sexy,” she smiled.
“I know. What are you wearing?” He asked settling down in his bed and bringing
his knees up.
“What do you want me to wear?” She asked quietly and ran her fingertips across
her stomach.
“A Catholic school girl uniform,” he grinned.
“Oh my God,” she giggled. “You’re such a nerd. How about a french maid’s
uniform?”
“Yeah,” he laughed. “What about nothing at all?” He suggested in a low voice.
“I think that can be arranged,” she purred into the phone.
“Mm, God,” he breathed shifting as the blood raced to the growing bulge in his
shorts. “I’m so coming to New York, like, right now.”
“What would you do when you got to my room?” She asked.
“Damn Ruby. I want you so bad,” he told her leaning his head against the
headboard.
“Zac I want you too. But we can’t do this,” she said sitting up.
He sighed. “I know.”
