By the way, last night I saw Fugazi and Explosions in the Sky play. It was the best show I've ever seen. Seriously--I was amazed beyond belief.
And now onto the news. It seems like there's a lot of old people in the news today. Let's get started...
Columbia signs David Bowie
Columbia Records has signed music icon David Bowie to a multi-record deal through his ISO Records. Scheduled for release on June 11th, the first of the new records out will be Heathen--Bowie's first studio album in three years, and his first studio collaboration with Tony Visconti in more than two decades. Bowie was without a label contract since last year when EMI Group Plc let him go--as they did also with Mariah Carey--as part of its ongoing plan to cut costs associated with veteran acts. Following the release of Heathen, Bowie is expected to perform a series of American and European festivals this summer. Already confirmed, he'll be the curator of this year's Meltdown Festival on London's South Bank.

Update on Peter Buck case: Michael Stipe and friends called to stand
As previously reported earlier in the week, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck is currently on trial for an alledged air-rage incident that took place last year. Forty-two-year-old R.E.M. frontman, Michael Stipe, was called to the stand at Isleworth Crown Court in London for questioning. Here's a few excerpts from Stipe's interview, discussing his relationship with Buck: "We met in 1979 when I was a teenager. He was my only friend at that time. He treated me like a big brother when I was 19. He was the only person I knew as I had just moved [to Athens, Georgia] with my family. He was the only person that would talk to me. He was interested in music as I was. He went out of his way to make me feel comfortable." Stipe then interupted himself. "I'm sorry--I am feeling very nervous. I think it's because I'm kind of shy." He then continued in telling how Buck very much did not enjoy the limelight. "There is a lot of press attention on the singer which is what I am. Peter always said it was because he was taller. He always wanted to stand behind in all of our pictures. He had always been incredibly supportive of the media attention that I get and never wanted the attention for himself." When asked if he had ever seen Buck be aggressive or rude, Stipe replied, "Not once--never," and then described him as a "southern gentleman" and thus the allegations "absurd." R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, band manager Bertis Downs, and Buck's wife Stephanie were also questioned as character witnesses. The scandolous NME (http://www.nme.com) have more quotes from the trial, which was adjourned until after the Easter holiday.
Unwound break-up
It's already been in the news that Unwound will be departing as a band soon, but they've now released a statement confirming the news, commenting on their ride and sharing future plans:
"Yes, Unwound has decided to call it quits. Due to our inability to do any touring for an indefinite period we have decided to disband. We will continue to play music in different forms (other than unwound) in the future and also hope to release a collection of live tracks, demos and any unreleased material there is. Also hopefully a live/tour video-movie of some sort. Apologies to those who missed their chance to see us last year due to our cancellations. We can't begin to thank all of those who helped us over the years, so we hope you know who you are! A round of applause from us to all the fans that came and went. Thanks and good night!
unwound people" (--http://www.killrockstars.com)
Unwound will play their final show tonight in Olympia, Washington with Thekla.
TV Appearances
Tonight MTV will run a (I think) new episode of Señor Moby's House of Music--the best show at airing good videos since 120 Minutes. I think it's on every late Friday night now, from 12:00 to 12:30 a.m. I wasn't able to catch it last week, but the week before that they showed great videos from Air, Clinic, David Bowie, the Hives, and the White Stripes. Moby hosts each show holding a video camera. (Now that's cheap.)
And just so you're ahead, I'll now brief you on some other upcoming TV appearances I think you'd might like to make note of:
Mon 04-01-02 Phantom Planet - The Late Late Show with Craig Kilbourn (CBS)
Fri 04-05-02 ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - The Late Late Show with Craig Kilbourn (CBS)
Tue 04-09-02 The Strokes - The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS)
Tue 04-16-02 Beulah - Late Night with Conan O'Brien (BNC)
Wed 04-17-02 Saves the Day - Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC)
We'll keep you updated once it's confirmed. Also, go here to read about Phil's London Marathon. Sponsor him and you have a chance to win some drum equipment used during OK Computer sessions.

Note: I think I'm going to provide lots of news tomorrow.
Okay, okay. I'll stop because I really don't care about the major label debate. You guys who do--you're dripping in lamesauce. And I hear when Pollard is drunk he actually performs better. (A sort of method the Strokes' Julian Casablancas imitates.)
Pollard says of their new deal, "It's great to be reunited with our good friends at Matador, fellow rock geeks with the same basic philosophy on record artistry. We are very happy getting back to autonomously making records ourselves and have the ball back in our court." And Matador representative Gerald Cosloy: "Chris Lombardi and I, along with the entire Matador staff, are psyched to be working again with Guided By Voices, a band we've long considered to be one of rock's finest, witha visionary leader/songwriter in the person of Mr. Pollard. We have long regretted the interruption of their tenure with the label and are grateful this partnership will recommence." (Guided by Voices: http://www.gbv.com)
Anyway, Guided by Voices have put out great music their whole career as band, despite whichever record label they've been on. In the mid '90s they released a couple things on Matador, like 1996's Under the Bushes Under the Stars and 1997's Mag Earwhig. Universal Truths and Cycles was recorded in November and December of last year at Cro-Magnon Studio in Dayton, Ohio. The full-length features eighteen new songs, which span forty-six minutes.

Michigan Fest 2002
Also beginning today is Michigan Fest 2002 in Wayne, Michigan. This is essentially a music festival booked with emo-ish bands (Hey Mercedes, Planes Mistaken for Stars, the Casket Lottery), and those hip bands (Death Cab for Cutie, the Dismemberment Plan) who were ignored by All Tomorrow's Parties and South by Southwest last weekend. Online tickets are no longer available, but there's said to be plenty of tickets left for purchase at the door. For further details, including a complete list of the bands scheduled to play each day of this weekend, look to the Michigan Fest Web site: http://www.michiganfest.org.

Icarus Line singer damages "memoriabilia"
Also at SxSW, singer Joe Cardamone of the Icarus Line got a little angry during their live set at the Hard Rock Cafe because the restaurant managers wouldn't let people under 21 in to watch them play. Cardamone allegedly smashed a case containing a guitar once played by Stevie Ray Vaughn (so they say), took the guitar, and ran with it outside as far as he could before being apprehended by nearby security guards. Now, keep in mind that Joe is one of the guys from Buddyhead (http://www.buddyhead.com), so when I heard of this I just laughed. On a more serious note, the Hard Rock Cafe is considering pressing charges, and will be turning the bills for repair over to Crank! Records.
In the same interview with NME, Adams commented on his own music: "It's just a bunch of bullshit anyway, it's a bunch of singer/songwriter crap - me telling some stupid fucking story about some stupid fucking bullshit thing. It's ridiculous, somebody might be interested, but it doesn't really fucking matter one way or the other." He sure sounds pissed off.
And finally, Adams denied rumors of a collaboration with James Walsh from Starsailor: "No, that's all fucking bullshit. It's all lies. I wrote a song, asked him to sing on it, showed him the lyrics five minutes before we went onstage and that's it. The idea that we wrote a song together, that's bollocks, or whatever you say." What's up with Adams? Did NME interview him while he was trying to take a dookie or something?

R.E.M. guitarist in court
R.E.M.'s guitarist, Peter Buck, was in court on Monday for his previous incident back in April of last year, when he threw a big temper-trantrum during a flight from Seattle to London. Described as a "dunker lout" while on the plane, Buck was said to have "turned over a breakfast trolley, accosted a pair of flight attendants, covering them in yogurt, and mistook a stranger for his wife," according to testimony in the London courtroom on Monday. He allegedly drank fifteen glasses of wine in the flight's first three hours. Peter Buck is still currently on trial.

Sparta spring & summer plans (I promise not to mention At the Drive-In)
Another scream-band with a twist of nicer singing. That's Sparta. And it sure doesn't help that they're from Texas. They're okay. It's kinda "eh." I've got three songs. They're not too bad. I want to hear more...and that is possible! In fact, next Tuesday (the 26th) they'll be releasing their first of anything: an EP on ReSTART/DreamWorks, entitled "Austere." So EPs don't cost that much do they? Actually, with my luck it'll just be the same three songs I already have. I guess I'll have to wait until this summer when they're projected to release their first full-length. Now that's more like it! Between now and then, Sparta have also lined up a slew of tourdates for all over the United States and Europe, smaller cities included. The tourdates are as follows:

Taken from a Múm website:
"The follow up to Yesterday was dramatic, today is ok is set to be released this spring (May 20th) on Fatcat records. The new album, Finally we are no-one, was recorded with a little help from Samuli “Son of Yoda” Kosminen on drums, pots, pans, water, dingldangls and floor scraping. Valgeir Sigurdsson one of Iceland’s top programmer/engineer also participates on múm’s new album. Valgeir’s work can be heard on Björk’s most recent album Vespertine.
The first single to be released from, Finally we are no-one, is called green grass of tunnel. The 7” and 3” will be available around March 2002. No remixes are planned for this single but fans can expect a video.
The Finally we are no one promotional tour will start around May and will spread múm’s music all over the planet."
Check out the AMAZING artwork for the new album and single here. Also, the site reports that Múm will be working with Semiconductor on a web project. Semiconduct are supposedly known for making films out of music.

TV Appearances
So yesterday my sister was watching some horrible Starsailor video on MTV, when I came in to bother her, and all of a sudden, they played a White Stripes video! Yep--a video for "Hotel Yorba." And then my sister left the room and was like, "Why do you like that? It's country." And I was like, "No it's not, stupid." It was just kinda surprising I guess. Cool video. But I'm not even done! Just a few minutes ago, I was watching Conan and it came to commericals, so I was going through the channels...and I got to Fox Sports's Southwest Sports Report or something--it's some regional sports-news thing or something...and they were showing basketball highlights to a White Stripes song! I swear, with all of this press I've been seeing with the Stripes, I'm convinced the supreme media are making them out to be this year's "it" band (like the Strokes were last year). I don't know about you, but I thought the White Stripes were so 2000.
Also, this is kinda old news, I think, but the Shins are supposidely background music for a recent McDonald's commericial? Get outta town!
Note: This coming Monday night, the White Stripes are scheduled to be musical guests on The Late Show with David Letterman, as Clinic are to be on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilbourn. We'll remind you on Monday.

Radiohead Target Margets with Ewan McGregor
The Radioheads has collaborated with actor Ewan McGregor on an advertisement for the anti-poverty charity War On Want. According to NME: "The clip is calling for a tax on currency speculation. The charity claims such speculation destabilises the economies of developing countries in the name of profits for Western speculators. They are appealing for a small tax of a fraction of one per cent to calm currency markets and raise funds for development." The advertisement will be in edited form for cinemas nationwide, while you can view the original version on the charity's website here.

Wilco News via Leah
Our very own Leah has informed us that the new Wilco shirts will be available starting today. They are shirts that support the Wilco documentary that is currently in production by Sam Jones. Leah says she would've gotton one if she could only find a way to make it look sexy (cutting, etc.); unfortunately, she says it's hopeless. If you think you'd look sexy in them, go here to buy some.

New album from Six by Seven
Six by Seven has just released their second full-length album, The Way I Feel Today, via Mantra Recordings, and have already received critical praise for it. Says Time Out: "If you thought modern rock was all posturing, Six by Seven prove you wrong. Heck, even if you think you don't like rock music, you should try this. The UK's best rock band"; and from The Fly: "A band who sound this good really should be so much bigger. So much more than a rock and roll band Six By Seven are capable not only of rocking like the mother, but of creating beautiful, epic tracks exploiting some of their deepest feelings. Now is Six By Seven's time. We owe it to them. We owe them love." Personally, I think these reviews are dripping in lamesauce, but there must be at least some truth behind them. Much more Saddle Creek news
Desaparecidos sadly losts their ("hubba-hubba") bassist, and their touring van while in the middle of a West Coast swing a few weeks ago. The band, led by Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst, are looking at friends who play bass to fill the void. But yeah, my friend and Berkeley-schoolmate (who doesn't play bass), Vanessa, said they actually made due for their San Fransisco gig: they just played Bright Eyes songs. Yeah, she said it worked out nicely. (Conor's voice makes her cream her pants--seriously. So I don't know if I should be asking her.) Saddle Creek Records last month released Desaparecidos's debut record, Read Music/Speak Spanish. It's thought to be more aggressive than anything from Bright Eyes. (Now that should be some intense shit.) Hey, I don't know. Don't look at me. I'm reading this shit from Entertainment Weekly and MOJO and Spin--the shit's all there. The magazines are all over it.
A little ways down the street from Desaparecidos, resides that moody guy with all the beer--Tim Kasher--and the rest of the Good Life. Oh, the Good Life. Actually, I think Desaparacidos and the Good Life share members. Hell, it's all family I bet. (A family affair.) I saw the Good Life play almost exactly a year ago (March 10, 2001) at the Bottleneck in Lawrence, Kansas. At times they could be boring--but with an intermix of traditional sad rock, and synthesizers and keyboards and cellos and the works, it just couldn't be that boring. I haven't listened to them since. But I think I should. I know I should. Actually, they did release some new stuff a week ago: a new CD/LP, entitled Black Out. I'll add it to my list.
Saddle Creek, you should send us records to review.
I haven't heard much from this other Saddle Creek band, Azure Ray, who just released an EP. Saddle Creek's latest newsletter, however, had this to tell:
"We are pleased to have gotten the opportunity to release Azure Ray’s latest EP. November is a logical progression of the sound they claimed on their debut. The acoustics and vocal harmonies are still present, yet presented in a more stripped down version than on their first release. In addition to the highly effective vocal and acoustic guitar combo, the title track starts off the EP with the addition of cello as played by Nirvana’s In Utero cellist Kera Schaley. November was recorded entirely at Chase Park Transduction with Andy Lemaster (Now It’s Overhead, Bright Eyes) and contains six tracks (running time of 26 minutes), five originals and a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s 'For the Sake of the Song'."
And let's not forget the Faint. Concert halls across the States are sold out for their upcoming tour with No Doubt. The dates are all set:

OXES ARTWORK AND HOW IT AFFECTS US.
Due to a public outcry regarding Oxes-OXXXES (2nd LP) artwork, Monitor would like to inform all concerned, that the CD artwork has now been changed, but, due to early pressing and promotional needs, as well as OXES right to express themselves, Monitor will not change the vinyl artwork. We have chosen to have it released in an opaque plastic jacket with a warning sticker.
All people who participated in protesting the artwork- MONITOR and OXES would like to thank you for being so concerned, but we hope that someday soon your narrow minds and righteous attitudes blossom into a greater understanding and would like you to realize how you affect your own lifestyle by protesting artistic endeavors. Do the names Jesse Helms ( for those of you online-go here) or Tipper Gore and the PMRC ring a bell?

album review: cLOUDDEAD - s/t
album review: Jim O'Rourke - Bad Timing
article: Rather Ripped takes an introspective look at Boston's debut album released in 1976. Very interesting. Read here.
Also, last week, the band sent out an 8-track sampler of Maladroit to journalists and radio stations throughout the US (produced by Weezer themselves). The sampler was accompanied with a letter from the band which failed to mention their label Interscope. Apparently, Interscope was not too happy with the early leakage of the album, so they made Rivers write the radio stations to not play any of the songs. We here at TinyMixtapes applaud Weezer's effort, well at least I do.
