Chapter Three: Chubu Dragon

Relena Peacecraft waited with Pagan and Quatre at the landing strip at the Sanc Kingdom as nighttime settled over the Earth. It was a half moon that night and the Nippon festival was already on its way. Relena sighed in relief as the Peacemillion touched down a minute later, the light green aura that it had disappeared. Quatre smiled and waved as he saw everyone get off the ship. His own dragon, Dove, flew out and greeted his comrades.

"Milirado, you're all right." Relena said as she hugged her brother. Her eyes landed on Dorothy and she smiled.

"Relena, nice to see you again." Dorothy said as she approached Relena. Relena ran into her lover's embrace and cried softly. Quatre smiled as he saw Heero and Trowa standing hand in hands, a blissful look on their faces.

"Hey Quatre!" Hilde said as she waved at the Arabian Prince. Quatre blushed and hurried to Hilde's side. Sally and Duo got off, followed by Howard and his crew.

"Who's that?" Quatre asked as he could not help but notice the almond-eyed boy that looked around him, breathing in the air and smiling as he saw various floats flying over the city.

"That's WuFei. He's really nice," Hilde said. "And, I think Duo likes him." Hilde added as she gestured to her brother who was looking at WuFei, a mixture of bliss and sadness on his face.

"I want to invite everyone to the festival. After, we can all talk. I can't say how glad I am to see everyone safe and sound, and I welcome our new friends." Relena said. Fox, Bat, Wolf and WuFei looked up from their respective positions and nodded. Heero caught up with Relena.

"Have you had any visions since we left?" Heero whispered.

"None. Dove says that there is a presence here on Earth that is very strong." Relena replied.

"That's what the other Dragons said. Well let's see what happens." Heero said as he smiled and hurried back to Trowa. WuFei looked up to the sky and the stars twinkled softly at him. Earth was beautiful....

"WuFei?" Duo asked uncertainly as he stood beside WuFei. After the kiss, he had left WuFei alone like the boy had requested. He had spent the rest of the trip musing over WuFei and the feather. WuFei focused his gaze on Duo and smiled softly.

"You won't hate me will you?" WuFei asked.

"I could never hate you." Duo replied as he clasped WuFei's hand in his. WuFei looked at the moon and looked away quickly.

"You haven't a reason to...yet." WuFei said as he let his hand slide away from Duo's.

"I don't understand. I've always followed my emotions." Duo said as he followed WuFei.

" If I did, I would be dead by now." WuFei said as he hastened his footsteps, catching up with the crowd. Duo stood for a moment and sighed. He always followed his emotions, especially when dreams reinforced them.

Duo followed WuFei into the Sanc Kingdom and showed him around, keeping the rest of the group near by.

"Is it like this every night?" WuFei asked as a giggling couple passed him, waving huge butterfly kites behind them.

"Well, this is the Nippon festival. At the stroke of midnight, it becomes the year AC 201, the start of a new century." Duo said as he smiled. WuFei returned the favor by nodding in understanding. I don't get it...he's nice and friendly but once I get too close, he freezes up and wills me to stay away. Is he afraid of me? Duo rubbed his amulet and sighed. Bat muttered sleepily.

"The... the presence, it's...so close.... So sleepy..." Bat whispered. Duo stopped and started yelling at his amulet.

"Bat, wake up! What's wrong?! Bat!" Duo screamed. Heero and Zechs checked on their dragons and found them in the same condition.

"Quatre, it's the Chubu Dragon." Dove whispered. Quatre felt tears prick his eyes at the pain in his dragon's voice. People screamed as the amulets lit up and were dragged into the night sky, helpless against the force that was pulling them in. WuFei looked at the moon. A faint green light lit up the moon for a second and died away. WuFei clutched his chest as familiar pain swept over him.

"WuFei, gods what's going on?" Duo asked as he held WuFei up. Zechs ran up to Duo.

"Duo, what's wrong" Zechs asked as WuFei breathed heavily, his hand glowing green again.

"It's the heart attack thing that Sally mentioned. Get Sally." Duo screamed.

"Duo." WuFei whispered.

"WuFei, damn it, tell me what's wrong." Duo said as he forced his tears down.

"Don't worry, please." WuFei whispered. WuFei went still for a moment and suddenly smiled. He kissed Duo softly, the startled prince accepting the yielding lips underneath his.

"WuFei, I..." Duo said as WuFei pulled away.

"You're going to hate me." WuFei whispered as he pushed Duo away just as the ground rumbled in anger. Claw like hands shot up from under WuFei, carrying him high in the sky. People ran screaming and headed from shelter.

"Duo, Zechs!" Heero shouted as dust filled the air. WuFei lay unconscious as the claw like hands wrapped around him and pulled him under the ground. The entire rumbling stopped the moment the claw like hand disappeared.

"I'm going after him." Duo said as he grabbed a horse from a nearby rider and galloped into the crater that the hand had made.

"I'll go after Duo." Zechs said as he took the next horse and waved to his sister before disappearing into the Earth. People peered into the hole, not even sure if it was bottomless.

"Relena, what should we do?" Dorothy asked as she placed a comforting hand on her koibito's shoulder.

"I don't know Dorothy, I don't know." Relena whispered.

"Sally, clear everyone out of the square. Trowa, Quatre and I will wait here." Heero said as he sat down and tried to concentrate.

"Okay. You heard him girls, let's move." Sally said.

WuFei opened his eyes and found himself at the foot of a cave, which happened to be on a volcano, Mount Fuji to be exact. WuFei shivered from the cold. The mountain moved, he could feel it. Something was alive, barely and it was breathing.

"What are you?" he asked. The pain in his chest was completely gone. In the cave, a green eye glimmered.

"Merian took care of you." The being said.

"Chubu Dragon?" WuFei asked.

"Yes. I'm the Central Dragon of this world. I drew my strength from Dove, Fox, Bat and Wolf. They too, are a part of me." Chubu said, it's low voice music to WuFei's ears.

"What do you want me to do? You've called me, why?" WuFei asked. The dragon paused and the eye looked down the mountain. Down below was Duo, muttering curses climbing up the mountain.

"I'm coming Fei!" Duo shouted as he climbed higher.

"Fool!" the mountain seemed to boom as it shook itself in an eruption that sent Duo crashing away from it and into a dark pit of molten lava.

"No!" WuFei screamed as he jumped off after Duo. His heart and mind raced, at his promise. He shut out his mother's voice and dived down faster. Duo yelled as the heat got to him, making his breathing harder; he looked up and saw a hand reach out to him. He took it and was hauled out before he became well done by the lava. Duo looked up and saw smiling velvet eyes. It was WuFei. Duo saw white feathers flicker across his vision. WuFei had two large magnificent wings on his back, bursting from the back of his shirt. WuFei landed Duo safely on he ground, away from the volcano and WuFei fell to his knees, breathing heavily. WuFei shivered a bit, the wings shaking in response. Duo brushed the wings lightly, the glowing white of the feathers flashing his mind into WuFei's mind.

//.... A young WuFei smiled as he sat on his mother's bed, bouncing up and down in the blue sheets and grinning wildly.

"Wu, stop that." Merian said as she smiled softly and picked up her four year old son who smiled at her and kissed her nose. Merian laughed, her smile fading as a familiar presence filled the room.

"What are you doing here Treize?" she asked without as much turning her head.

"I came to see our son." Treize said as he approached her. Merian burned in anger as she concentrated and large white wings burst from her back and lifted her off the floor. WuFei clutched at a falling feather and giggled. Treize sighed and let his almost transparent wings elevate him off the floor and he followed Merian outside the window.

"He is not your son. I told you, he is the last of the Ryujinbito. He is the child of the Chubu Dragon who used me as her vessel. Never elevate yourself to his level. He is superior to you." Merian said as she glared angrily, her black eyes churning with rage.

"But I found you injured on Earth and brought you here. Weren't those Earthlings trying to kill you?" Treize said. Merian paused and smiled at her child who bore a serious expression on his face, trying to understand what was going on.

"It is only for his sake that I agreed to marry you. And you stole me from Earth. Do not think that your new status belittles your crime. You get to bear the name Ryujinbito, until my son denounces you." Merian said.

"Very well Merian." Treize said as he returned to the palace.

Merian looked at her son who mimicked his mother's movement and soft white wings burst from his back.

"You've already learned. WuFei, you can't let anyone see you like this. I know that someday... Chubu, the Central Dragon will awaken and call you to Earth, your real home. They hated our people, the Ryujinbito on Earth; they always have since we are different. Please, for my sake don't show them. I don't want you killed. I want you to lead a normal life." Merian said as she pressed her forehead to her son's head. The baby was silent and WuFei willed his wings away.

"Okay Okaa-san. Can we play now?" WuFei asked he clapped his hands and smiled. Merian smiled softly.

1 year later...

WuFei cried as the Aeolians lowered his mother's body unto a large bonfire and burned it with star fire. WuFei cried till the wind carried away the ashes, a scent of orchids filling the air.

"Okaa-san, it'll be okay..." //

Duo rested his head against WuFei's back.

"I don't hate you WuFei. I love you even more." Duo whispered as he faced WuFei, lifting a saddened face up to his. WuFei smiled weakly.

"I, didn't want you, to die." WuFei whispered as he leaned into Duo, tiredness overcoming him.

"Duo, are you here?" Zechs called out as he saw Duo on the ground, his arms wrapped around a winged creature.

"Don't touch him." Duo whispered as Zechs made a move to touch the feathers, not knowing if they were real. Zechs withdrew his hand and sighed.

"My dragonling, why are you associating with this human?" Chubu asked as she blew the volcano top, stepping out of it, her long elegant form stretching from her sleep. WuFei looked up.

"Because I love him." WuFei said as he smiled gently at Duo.

"That may be so. I want to return back into the Shinto Region, my home is there... our home." Chubu said softly.

"Chubu I don't want to." WuFei whispered.

"WuFei, I do not want my own young to suffer here. For centuries, dragons have been hunted down and killed. And you the Ryujinbito, our human looking offspring have been hunted down and killed mercilessly, your feathers used for one too many things. I will not let that happen." Chubu said softly, nuzzling her child with her large head.

"I can take care of him." Duo said. Chubu peered at him and drew away from Duo.

"No, I can't." she whispered, her voice shaking.

"WuFei, let me speak with you, alone." Chubu said. WuFei pulled away from Duo and approached the dragon.

"What is it Okaa-san?" he asked.

"That boy, his eyes...." the dragon whispered.

"I know. There is something sinister in them. But, I can help him fight it. I have your strength and wisdom." WuFei said

"He is dangerous, like you." Chubu said. WuFei and Chubu glanced over to where Duo was waiting.

"I’ll be careful Chubu. I can guide you home and return to Earth." WuFei said as he petted the dragon’s head.

"Very well." Chubu said after she thought for a moment. " Then, come let us go." WuFei turned to Duo and smiled.

"I have to go Duo. I’ll be back soon." WuFei said.

"Where are you going?" Duo asked as he clutched WuFei’s hand.

"I’m taking Chubu back home, among her stars. I’ll come back, I promise." WuFei said as he saw distress in violet orbs, overshadowed by death.

"I’ll come with you." Duo said as he stood up. WuFei shook his head.

"You’re human Duo, I can’t protect the two of us in space." WuFei said.

"You don’t know everything about me. Bat and I will merge into one being and I’ll be able to go with you." Duo said. A wave of panic crossed WuFei’s mind from Chubu’s mind as Duo spoke.

"I’m not sure." WuFei said with uncertainty.

"Please WuFei." Duo whispered as he cupped WuFei’s face in his hand and kissed him softly, easing all negative thoughts from WuFei’s mind. WuFei pulled away with a blush in his cheeks.

"Very well." WuFei said. Duo smiled.
