The P7

"If one is going to carry an underpowered pistol he should carry the neatest and handiest one available and that is the H&K P7."
----Jeff Cooper

Underpowered??? I think not.

The extremely compact HK P7 can be drawn, cocked, and fired accurately, faster than any other pistol. With an overall length and width close to many .380 pocket pistols, the full-power 9mm P7 has a full length four-inch barrel enclosed in a low profile steel slide.

The unique HK cocking lever allows the P7 to be carried safely with a round in the chamber, yet it is ready to fire by the intentional squeezing of the fingers around the grip. Releasing the cocking lever decocks the P7 immediately and renders it completely safe. The cocking lever also doubles as a slide release lever. This innovative firing system means that

HK P7 pistols have a constant uniform single-action trigger pull for all rounds fired. Unlike conventional double action pistols, here is no change in trigger pull between critical first and second shots. And P7 pistols are completely ambidextrous.

The P7 gas system retards the movement of the recoiling slide during firing and eliminates the need for a conventional locking mechanism or heavy slide. The low profile slide contributes to the balanced center of gravity and compact size of the P7. With its fluted chamber, the P7 will extract and eject an empty shell even if the extractor is missing. The extractor, which doubles as a loaded chamber indicator, only aids in making extraction smooth and uniform.Made of high grade steel, the low profile slide keeps the recoiling mass as small as possible. A fixed, polygonal barrel made by cold hammer forging ensures accuracy and increased barrel life.

Combined with the optimal grip angle of 110°, the result is a compact, accurate, and low recoil pistol well-suited to civilian, military, and law enforcement users.

Five variants of the P7 pistol are made by HK. The P7M8 and P7 PSP are 9mm models that use eight round magazines. Essentially the same as the P7M8, the P7 PSP has a smaller trigger guard and European-style magazine release in the bottom of the frame. The P7M13 is similar to the P7M8, but uses a thirteen round magazine. The P7M13 is currently available only to law enforcement and military users in the US.

The P7M10 is a 10 round .40 S&W. HK no longer produces this version due to lack of popularity. Albeit contributing to this was it's "over engineering" of the slide which made this pistol a bit more bigger than it should be.

The P7K3 utilizes a hydraulic buffer. Caliber change is possible within the same P7K3 pistol frame since the barrel is easily removable from the frame. The P7K3 was chambered in .380 and with a conversion kit able to fire .22 caliber or .32 cal. Albeit this was aimed towards the countries that prohibited military calibers. A special slide unit could also be had for L/E and military to fire plastic training ammunition. The slide was identifiable with a blue dot on the side. Reports were that the plastic ammunition fired from this training pistol still had sufficient penetration and lost it's energy real fast that it was utilized by an unknown agency aboard airlines by it's agents.

Sadly one prototype that never made it to production status was the P7M7. This was a .45 cal version of the P7 series. It's operation was different from the rest of the P7 series. Instead of the gas retarding system, the P7 utilized an oil buffer system similar to what you would find in artillery systems. The P7 held 7 rounds in the magazine. Many to this day still would like to see the P7M7 become a reality. All HK P7 pistols are covered by a lifetime warranty for the original retail purchaser.
